KANSAS CITY, MO (February 11, 2011) - As American Catholics, Episcopalians, and Anglicans quietly welcomed the new year in with liturgical prayer there was something phenomenal happening in England. Three Church of England bishops were being warmly received into the Roman Catholic Church. This was first step of the implementation of the Anglicanorum Coetibus, Pope Benedict XVI's worldwide plan to bring disenfranchised Anglicans and Episcopalians into the fullness of the Catholic Church and taking the first steps to fulfill Christ's prayer that there would be one flock and one shepherd.

In the United States many eyes were on Britain as the reality of the implementation of the world's first Anglican Ordinariate unfolded. Great interest has been garnered as the historic events riveted members of the Anglican Communion and the Continuing Anglican Movement in this country and around the globe as well as the entire Catholic world as the remarkable moment in religious history was being made in London. The news was spread in an instant on the Internet.

Now from the American heartland a Catholic priest reaches out to his fellow Catholics, Anglicans and Episcopalians to join him in celebrating this first substantial move toward authentic Christian unity since the splintering of the universal church at the Reformation.

For two days, Feb. 25-26, St. Thérčse Little Flower Catholic Church at 5814 Euclid Avenue in Kansas City, MO will welcome all those who are interested in celebrating and learning more about this monumental moment in Christian history.

"We're celebrating something great and taking part in a historic event," Fr. Ernie Davis, Pastoral Administrator at St. Therese said as he issued an open invitation for all Anglican Ordinariate-bound Christians to come together in a spirit of unified prayer, fraternal brotherhood, shared Anglo-Catholic fellowship, and mutual encouragement.

"We're making history," the priest noted.

The history that Fr. Davis is helping to make is that the Pope's dream of unity is beginning to become a reality as the various Anglican "cousins" start to gather with their Catholic brethren to become one in body, one in spirit, one in faith and one in baptism.

For two days of grace, from Friday evening Feb. 25, through Saturday afternoon Feb. 26, the Kansas City Catholic church will host a "Becoming One" gathering. Anglican and Catholic laity, religious, deacons, priests and even bishops will pray in unison, mingle and break bread together, exchange information and ideas in the spirit of fellowship and camaraderie as they journey together into the proposed American Anglican Ordinariate.

Catholic and Anglican liturgical forms will be the spiritual scaffolding for discussion panels and information sessions designed to help shed some light on the progress of the formal establishment of the Anglican Ordinariate in the United States and the melding together of various Anglican groups into one ecclesial Catholic family. Catholic Mass, Vespers and Benediction will be celebrated according to the Anglican Use of the Catholic liturgy, while Anglican participants will contribute Compline, Morning Prayer and Noonday Prayers from their Anglican tradition.

Integral to the Anglican Use liturgy is the generous use of metered music. St. Thérčse Little Flower is blessed to have Bruce Prince-Joseph, one of the foremost Anglican organists in the world. He at one time played with the famed Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, where he was lead organist, harpsichordist and pianist for more than two decades.

"I went to the Bruce Prince-Joseph's rehearsal last night. It was stunning. The acoustics at St. Thérčse are superb," Fr. Davis revealed. "He has recruited a very nice men's Gregorian Chant Choir [Catholics and Episcopalians] who will be assisting at Evensong and Benediction on Friday evening. It should be a stunning celebration - some Anglican and some Latin."

An Anglican Use liturgy is a carefully choreographed pageant of sights, sounds and smells that use the Book of Divine Worship as its Book of Common Prayer. The liberal use of Elizabethan English is common, lending an air of majesty, pomp and mystique.

In the United States there are perhaps as many as a hundred Catholic, Protestant Episcopal, Traditional Anglican Communion, Anglican Church in North America, and Anglican Use Catholic congregations, societies, religious orders and hermits -- incorporating thousands of individuals -- who are seeking immediate membership in the Anglican Ordinariate in the United States. Although Donald Cardinal Wuerl's office is keeping mum about exact numbers as the first wave of Ordinariate-bound Anglicans line up to make ecclesial history.

Now a unique opportunity has risen to allow all these various individuals and groups to begin to intermingle and start to become one bonded Catholic spiritual family in the Anglican Ordinariate which has already formed in England and is starting to take shape on the North American continent, through the various "Becoming One" gatherings popping up in the United States and Canada.

Last November the first "Becoming One" gathering was held at Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. OLA is the initial Anglican Use parish and flagship church of the Pastoral Provision. The founding pastor is the Rev. Christopher Phillips, a Pastoral Provision priest who left his Episcopal priesthood to be reconciled with the Catholic Church almost three decades ago. However, the Episcopal-turned-Catholic priest has never lost his love for the Anglican patrimony and has worked diligently to maintain it and helped to foster the Catholic Church's appreciation of the uniqueness of the English style of worship. He has labored hard to protect and preserve the Anglican patrimony as one part of the Catholic Church's rich and varying liturgical expression.

Fr. Phillips will be at the Kansas City Becoming One gathering. He is scheduled to preach at Saturday's Anglican Use Mass.

Two bishops are also scheduled address the "Becoming One" gathering. The Rt. Rev. David Moyer, the Tradition Anglican Communion's Bishop of the Armed Forces and the Bishop-in-Charge of the Patrimony of the Primate. The TAC bishop is slated to be the keynote speaker at Friday evening's formal dinner. Bishop Moyer is also rector of Good Shepherd - Rosemont, a historic Anglo-Catholic parish in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. In addition, His Excellency the Most Rev. Robert Finn, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, is to be the speaker at Saturday's concluding luncheon.

We ask you, humbly: don't scroll away.

"They are the ones who are making the important presentations," Fr. Davis noted. "There will be several of us who might chime in a little bit, but they are the leaders of this."

In fact, Fr. Davis is a Pastoral Provision priest himself. He is a former Episcopal cleric, who is married and a dad to three children. He wears a wide gold wedding band on the ring finger of his left hand, an unfamiliar sight on a Roman Catholic priest. The "Becoming One" host was converted to Roman Catholicism in the late 1990s and was then ordained as a Catholic priest in 2002. He is now the Pastoral Administrator at St. Thérčse Little Flower, an established unique, friendly and energetic African-American Catholic parish with an Anglican Use contingent.

The Kansas City priest hopes that many of his fellow Catholics will come just to see what all the excitement is about and to meet their Anglican "cousins" who will shortly become their Catholic "brothers and sisters" in the fullness of faith.

Fr. Davis requests that those who are interested in attending the "Becoming One" to register online at http://ecommerce.diocese-kcsj.org/ecommerce/events.php so that an accurate nose count can be taken to help St. Thérčse Little Flower Catholic Church properly prepare for seating, liturgy and meals. For more information Fr. Davis can be reached at (816) 444-5406 or by e-mail edavis@sttheresekc.org.

There is a $25 registration fee to help defray the cost of meals.
