Capital Campaign for Franciscan University Surpasses Goal, Raises $31 Million

STEUBENVILLE, OH (December 2, 2010) - As of December 1, 2010, Franciscan University of Steubenville has raised over $31 million for the most ambitious capital campaign in its history, surpassing its $25 million goal by nearly 25 percent.

"I am overjoyed to announce that the Campaign for Franciscan University has raised over $31 million," said Father Terence Henry, TOR, president of Franciscan University. "I cannot begin to express my gratitude to the many kind and generous benefactors whose contributions enhance our ability to offer an authentic, life-transforming Catholic education."

The University kicked off the Campaign for Franciscan University in October 2006, with funding for student scholarships, a new friary for the Franciscan TOR priests and brothers serving the campus community, and the Finnegan Fieldhouse expansion among its top priorities.

"When I talk to our students and hear how they hope to use their education to transform the culture for Christ, it makes me even more grateful for the success of this campaign. The University can now offer more financial assistance to those students who are most deserving and most in need," Father Henry said.

The largest amount raised in the campaign went toward student scholarships. Franciscan University surpassed its $5 million scholarship goal by raising $15 million, creating 39 new scholarships.
Other funds raised allowed the University to establish the John N. and Jamie D. McAleer Endowed Chair in Bioethics, and the H. Graham Brown Jr. Fellowship in Catechetics. Additionally, campaign gifts have enabled campus growth through the construction of the new Holy Spirit Friary, renovations to Egan Hall, and the planned expansion of Finnegan Fieldhouse.

"It's so gratifying to see the continued dedication of alumni and friends to the mission of Franciscan University, especially in the current economic climate," Father Henry said, noting that over $17 million of the total was raised during the U.S. economic downturn that began over two years ago. "May the Lord bless all those who support the University in so many ways, including those who joined us in asking the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe for the successful completion of this campaign. Our prayers have surely been answered."

According to Michael Hernon, vice president of Advancement, the $31 million in campaign donations came in the form of cash, stock, and planned gifts including charitable trusts and bequests, which allow benefactors to leave a legacy to Franciscan University. The single largest gift in the University's history, $2 million, was given through a bequest by an alumnus.

"It is encouraging to have alumni and friends plan for our future by setting aside a gift in their will or trust," said Hernon. "The University's mission is strengthened by their legacy and witness."

Eight donors supported the Campaign for Franciscan University with individual gifts ranging from $1 million to $2 million; another 47 donors gave six-figure gifts. A total of 2,295 donors contributed to the $31 million raised.

"We are most grateful for all the gifts--small and large--we have received. They are allowing us to enhance our academics and student life, and to give more students access to a Franciscan University education now and in the future," Hernon said.
