SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 7, 2010) - Ignatius Press and Magnificat have joined forces to launch a new line of beautifully illustrated, high quality, Catholic children's books, which are now available. These charming books will capture the imagination of children of various ages through delightful full-color illustrations, exciting stories from the Bible and lives of the saints, and simple yet powerful prayers.

Board books available for younger children

Three sturdy board books, "My First Prayers for My Family", "My First Prayers for Christmas", and "The Bible for Little Ones", are geared towards young children.

"My First Prayers for My Family" features charming four color pictures that help introduce young children to prayers that celebrate the blessings of family life. Included are prayers giving thanks for parents and the gift of baptism. There are also warm and gentle petitions for pardon and for departed family members. The book concludes with a bedtime prayer to the Holy Family.

The real meaning of Christmas is revealed in tender prayers in "My First Prayers for Christmas". The colorful illustrations help convey the theme of each prayer, whether it is the anticipation of Advent, the wonder of the shepherds, or the adoration of the Magi. Each prayer invites the child to praise and thank God for his greatest gift of all - Jesus, his son.

From creation to Pentecost, the main stories from the Old and New Testaments are lovingly told and illustrated in "The Bible for Little Ones". All the important characters are brought to life in beautiful pictures: Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Moses and David, Mary and Joseph, Jesus and his Apostles. The hard, child-friendly pages with rounded corners make this a perfect first Bible for little ones.

Beautiful hardcover books about the saints also released

Two beautiful hardcover books, "John Mary Vianney: The Holy Cure of Ars" and "Bernadette: The Little Girl from Lourdes", tell the stories of two of the Church's most treasured saints.

"Bernadette: The Little Girl from Lourdes", tells the story of St. Bernadette and her amazing encounters with the Virgin Mary. Young readers will enjoy the lovely watercolors and lively text, as they are introduced to the simple girl whose visions of a "beautiful lady" resulted in the discovery of a miraculous spring.

In "John Mary Vianney: The Holy Cure of Ars", children will learn how John Vianney heard his calling to the priesthood when as a young boy during the French Revolution he attended underground Masses with his devout family. They will also learn how he struggled in school, yet persevered until his dream to be a priest was realized. This book shows children the great example of his sacrificial priesthood in the village of Ars, and how with his kindness, wisdom, and miracles, he won over many hearts for God.

Comic book style books appeal to older children

Two other books, "The Adventures of Lupio, Volume 1: The Adventures and Other Stories", and "The Illustrated Gospel for Children", have fun, youthful but tasteful stories told in a comic book style.

The "Adventures of Lupio, Volume 1: The Adventures and Other Stories" tells the story of an adventurous young troubadour named Lupio, an orphan who meets Brother Francis of Assisi and his friend Brother Wolf. He begins a new life of joyfully trying to do good, while still getting by in a dangerous world. This series is sure to entertain young readers, and as they see the seeds of faith, hope, and charity taking root in Lupio, they will grow in their hearts too.

Jesus comes alive for young readers with vibrant and expressive illustrations, done in a youthful yet tasteful comic book style, in The Illustrated Gospel for Children. In this book, the moving story of the life of Jesus is told in a way that readers will find attractive and challenging. All famous scenes from the life of Christ are told - the nativity, miracles, crucifixion, and resurrection. The book concludes with the Ascension and Pentecost. The Gospel is simplified without losing any of its saving power, and children will ponder the question, "And what about you, who do you say that I am?"

First in a series of coloring books also released

The first volume in a series of coloring books entitled "Pictures from the Gospels: A Coloring Book" is also being released. This unique coloring book features simple line drawings which invite children to learn about the life of Jesus as they color. Beneath the headings on each page is the Bible chapter and verse where the story in the picture can be found, so parents can read the full Bible story to their children.

An exciting partnership

Ignatius Press is excited to partner with Magnificat, the publisher of the popular devotional, pocket size magazine that features daily Mass readings, meditations, and morning and evening prayers, to publish this new line of Catholic children's books. Ignatius Press is well known as the primary English-language publisher of Pope Benedict XVI's books. Ignatius also publishes several best-selling children's catechisms, such as the popular "Faith and Life" series, and is a partner of Bethlehem Books. Their experience and success with other children's products makes Ignatius Press confident that these new children's books will have a wide appeal to Catholic families and children.

Anthony Ryan, Marketing Director for Ignatius Press, says, "Ignatius Press is honored and excited to be working with Magnificat to publish this new line of such high quality, beautifully designed Catholic books for children that have that wonderful combination of inspiring, informative text with such lovely artwork. Magnificat has earned a very high reputation in the USA since they launched their incredibly popular monthly worship aid, Magnificat, and they have been publishing award-winning books in France for decades. We are very confident at Ignatius Press that this new collaboration with Magnificat will fill a real need for many more beautiful, outstanding Catholic books for children that will be greatly appreciated by the millions of Catholics, young and old, in North America."

There will be several ways to purchase these books. Ignatius Press will distribute the books to the general trade, through their catalogues and online at www.ignatius.com. Magnificat will also be selling the books exclusively to their subscriber base.

Anthony Ryan is available to give interviews about this new series. To schedule an interview, or to request review copies, please contact: Rose Trabbic, Publicist, Ignatius Press, (239)867-4180, rose@ignatius.com
