Catholics celebrate the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman
Ignatius Press offers significant works by and about Cardinal Newman,
whom Pope Benedict XVI will beatify on Sept. 19 during his visit to the United Kingdom

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 14, 2010) - Pope Benedict XVI will beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman on Sept. 19 - the last day of the Pope's visit to the United Kingdom. Organizers expect a crowd approaching 70,000 - including as many as 1,000 priests - to attend the beatification ceremony, which will be held in Birmingham's Crofton Park.

"Cardinal Newman's beatification is an historic occasion for English Catholics," said Ignatius Press President Mark Brumley. "It also holds significance for millions of Catholics in America, although that fact is not quite so well known as his role in English Catholicism.

"As the father of the Catholic Revival in the English speaking world, Newman's influence on Catholicism in the United States is immense and can scarcely be overstated," said noted author and Newman scholar Joseph Pearce. "In theology, philosophy, education and literature, Newman has enriched and enlightened the Catholic Church in America."

Ignatius Press is one of the world's leading sources for writings by and about Cardinal Newman. As the world awaits his beatification, American Catholics who are interested in getting acquainted with - or growing closer to - Cardinal Newman need look no further than www.Ignatius.com. Following are just some of the Newman-related offerings in the Ignatius catalog:

By Cardinal Newman:

• Parochial and Plain Sermons - This book offers all eight volumes of Cardinal Newman's famous sermons.. They are as powerful, fresh and challenging today as when he first gave them.
• Prayers, Verses and Devotions - This beautifully bound volume includes Cardinal Newman's most profound devotional writings - among them his meditations on the Litany of Loreto (for May) and on the Stations of the Cross, which already are recognized as classics of Catholic spirituality.
These collections also are available from the Ignatius Press website.
By other authors:
• The Heart of Newman, edited by Eric Przywara, S.J. - This new edition of a classic anthology of Cardinal Newman's writings and sermons includes a foreword by Pearce. "Newman is alive in the works that he has left and the influence he has exerted," he writes.
• Blessed John Henry Newman, by Keith Beaumont - This official biography is written by an Australian priest of the Oratoire de France and gives a clear account of all the major themes of Newman's life and work.
• John Henry Newman: His Inner Life, by Fr. Zeno, O.F.M. Cap. - Fr. Zeno is one of the world's foremost Newman scholars, and this work is the result of his extensive research and review of Cardinal Newman's letters, diaries, and complete published and unpublished sermons. Many consider this landmark work one of the best spiritual biographies of Cardinal Newman ever written.
