Dominican University Presents Hugh McElwain with Diversity Leadership Award

River Forest, IL (September 9, 2010) - Dominican University will present the 2010 Sister Mary Clemente Davlin, OP Diversity Leadership Award to Hugh McElwain, professor of theology, during the university's convocation on Tuesday, September 28. Convocation will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. Dominican's annual diversity leadership award is named in honor of Sister Mary Clemente Davlin, OP, professor emerita of English.

McElwain has taught at Dominican since 1973 and served as the dean of the university's Rosary College of Arts and Sciences from 1994 to 2002. He currently serves as professor of theology and is an active participant in many areas of the university, including leading service projects, attending the student Mass on campus, cheering on the athletic teams at most home games, and volunteering for several university events. For the past decade, McElwain has led a contingent of students to the School of Americas Protest in Fort Benning, GA.

McElwain has been involved in the peace and justice movement for more than four decades by marching for civil rights, protesting for peace during the Vietnam era, demonstrating for a nuclear freeze, resisting the Gulf War, and currently arguing strenuously against the Iraq war and the conflict in Afghanistan. He has been involved in promoting diversity at Dominican by helping to expand the university's celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, organizing workshops on ways to introduce diversity into the curriculum, and starting a required sophomore seminar course on diversity, culture and community.

McElwain earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and Latin from Stonebridge Priory, a diploma in philosophy from the Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, and a master's degree in divinity and a doctorate degree in theology from Marianum Pontifical Institute in Rome. Prior to coming to Dominican, McElwain served as professor of systematic theology and academic dean of The Catholic Theological Union at Chicago.
