Franciscan Conferences Celebrate 35 Years

STEUBENVILLE, OH (June 2, 2010) - When 500 priests gathered under a big tent at Franciscan University of Steubenville in 1975, no one imagined that event as the start of 35 years of summer conferences, with thousands of men, women, and teens transformed by God's grace.

This year, Franciscan University will celebrate its 35th anniversary of summer conferences as it welcomes over 41,000 participants to faith-sharing conferences in Steubenville and in 11 states and Canada.

"We are humbled how the Lord has greatly blessed the University through our conferences and how they have enabled many blessings to be poured out to our nation and become the source of so many conversions and vocations," said Franciscan University Chancellor Father Michael Scanlan, TOR, who organized the first priests conference.

"This year, guided by the theme, 'The truth shall set you free' from John 8:32, we'll gather to remember a promise Christ made 2000 years ago," said University President Father Terence Henry, TOR. "I can't think of a more timely or important theme."

This summer's schedule features dozens of well-known speakers, scholars, and Church leaders, including Justin Francis Cardinal Rigali of Philadelphia; San Antonio Archbishop José Gomez, recently appointed coadjutor of Los Angeles; and Bishop Samuel Jacobs of Houma-Thibodaux, Louisiana.

"We're always excited to see princes of the Church share the riches of the faith with our conference participants," said Mark Nehrbas, executive director of Christian Outreach. "And we're especially excited Bishop Jacobs will be with us for this special 35th anniversary year."

Bishop Jacobs is directly responsible for the startup of the youth conferences, which now number 18 and serve nearly 38,000 teens. As a priest, he helped run the early youth conferences. Upon first being named a bishop, he requested that Franciscan University bring its unique youth conference experience to his diocese. He also created the "vocations call" inviting youth who experience a call to the priesthood or religious life to come forth for a blessing.

"The USCCB recently surveyed men to be ordained to the priesthood in 2010," said Nehrbas, "and 8 percent reported having attended a Franciscan University High School Youth Conference prior to seminary."

Here is the lineup for the Adult Summer Conferences:

The Catholic Men's Conference, June 4-6, "Sharpened on the Rock." Speakers include Deacon Ralph Poyo, founder of New Evangelization Ministries, and Danny Abramowicz, former professional football player and coach, and host of Crossing the Goal on EWTN.

The Catholic Charismatic Conference, June 11-13, "Empowered by Truth." Co-hosted by Father Michael Scanlan, TOR, and Mark Nehrbas, speakers include Deacon Larry Oney, a member of Legatus and steering committee member for the Southern Regional Catholic Charismatic Conference; Ralph Martin, theology professor at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit; and Sister Ann Shields, SGL, author and international evangelist.

The Religious Sisters Conference, June 15-17, "Freely Given for Love." Hosted by Sister Katherine Caldwell, TOR, speakers include Mother Regina Marie Gorman, OCD, superior general of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles; Dr. John Bergsma, Franciscan University theology professor; and Sr. Ann Shields, SGL.

The Priests, Deacons, and Seminarians Conference, June 21-25, "Witness to Truth." Co-hosted by Father Michael Scanlan, TOR, and Father Dave Pivonka, TOR, speakers include Bishop Sam Jacobs; Father Francis Martin, renowned Scripture scholar; and Dr. Scott Hahn, Franciscan University theology professor and founder of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology.

The St. John Bosco Conference for Catechists and Religious Educators, July 21-25, "The Universal Call to Holiness." Through general session talks and more than 30 workshops, attendees can become eligible for certification in Catechumenal Ministry (RCIA), Catechist Certification, DRE Certification, and Youth Ministry.

The Applied Biblical Studies Conference, July 28-30, "Unveiling the Mystery: The Book of Revelation." Hosted by Dr. Scott Hahn, speakers include Archbishop José Gomez as homilist at the Thursday Mass; Dr. Brant Pitre, professor of Sacred Scripture at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans; and Dr. Edward Sri, author and co-founder of FOCUS Ministries.

The Defending the Faith Conference, July 30-August 1, "Be Transformed by the Renewal of Your Mind." Co-hosted by Dr. Alan Schreck and Dr. Scott Hahn, speakers include Justin Francis Cardinal Rigali; Father Benedict Groeschel, CFR, prolific author and ETWN show host; and Jeff Cavins, creator of The Great Adventure Bible study series.

Long-time adult conference-goers will be delighted to know that Jim Cowan returns for the 35th summer of conferences to lead the music ministry for the Men's, Charismatic, Applied Biblical Studies, and Defending the Faith conferences. Franciscan University catechetics professor Bob Rice will lead the music at the on-campus high school conferences.

In addition to the spiritual opportunities available at each summer conference, guests can also receive a plenary indulgence with a visit to the Portiuncula Chapel, a replica of the chapel rebuilt by St. Francis of Assisi. The decree issued in 2009 by the Vatican Office of the Apostolic Penitentiary enables conference-goers and other visitors to obtain full remission of the temporal punishment due for one's own sins or the sins of a soul in purgatory.
