New Book Explores 'Deeper Meaning' of English Translation of the Roman Missal

HAMPSTEAD, MD (May 25, 2010) - Author Louie Verrecchio (Harvesting the Fruit of Vatican II - Salve Regina Publications) will be the featured speaker at the Archdiocese of Denver's annual DRE Retreat taking place at St. Malo Retreat Center in Allenspark, CO, June 28-30, 2010. According to organizers, this year's theme, "Sacred Liturgy - Lifting Us to God," - will encompass six one hour presentations in which Verrecchio will offer "reflections on Sacrosanctum Concilium in light of the forthcoming new Roman Missal translation."
"Five of the six presentations will be devoted to exploring the Council's vision for liturgical reform and renewal," Verrecchio said, "while the opening presentation will focus on the prayers of the people in the new English translation of the Roman Missal."
The two topics are inextricably related, Verrecchio insists, and he called the new Missal a concrete example of the Church's effort to "reform the reform."
"In order to truly appreciate the context in which this new Missal is being promulgated, it's going to be very important for all of us - clergy, religious and laity alike - to consider the guidelines for liturgical reform that were set forth by the Second Vatican Council," Verrecchio said.
"The Council Fathers were very clear; liturgical instruction is a necessary component to promoting active participation in the sacred liturgy. I'd say we have a lot of catching up to do," he continued, "and with the new Missal on its way, now is the perfect time to begin."
In contribution to the effort, Salve Regina Publications has published the contents of Verrecchio's St. Malo presentation in a booklet entitled "And with Your Spirit - Recovering a sense of the sacred in the Roman Missal," available at HarvestingTheFruit.com.
"Even though it was written with an eye toward addressing the needs and concerns of pastors, Directors of Religious Education and others who are officially charged with paving the way for the Missal's reception, 'And with Your Spirit' is really intended for every Catholic who is committed to embracing the new translation," Verrecchio said.
In his most recent Catholic News Agency column, Verrecchio provided an excerpt from the new booklet ( http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/column.php?n=1234 ) and it has sparked substantial interest.
"Based on the emails that I received from readers, people are excited about the new Missal, and they're ready to begin the task of preparing for its arrival," Verrecchio said.
"'And with Your Spirit' takes readers through the upcoming changes to the prayers of the people; it explains their deeper meaning, and most importantly, it provides valuable insight as to how the new text will help us to recover a sense of the sacred in Holy Mass," Verrecchio stated.
"My hope is for this booklet to serve as a blessing for a great many Catholics; opening the way for a deeper form of participation in Holy Mass just as the Council Fathers intended."
"For that reason," Verrecchio continued, "I've decided to offer an electronic version of 'And with Your Spirit' on my website at no cost as a PDF download. I just want to make sure that this work reaches as many people as possible, including those who may not be able to purchase a hard copy."
The PDF version of the booklet has been available at HarvestingTheFruit.com for less than 24 hours and all indications are that word is already spreading. Verrecchio is encouraging people to pass the electronic booklet along to others as well.
"The liturgy is the centerpiece of Catholic life. We can't overstate the importance of recovering a sense of the sacred in Holy Mass. We just want to contribute to that effort, and by the grace of God there's no telling how many people we can touch with this humble work."
The electronic version of "And with Your Spirit" will remain available at no cost at least for the foreseeable future according to Verrecchio.
"Yes, we do need to sell hard copies too since the proceeds help to keep our apostolate going, but most of the people who have downloaded the free version have also chosen to make a donation as well. All in all, this approach seems to be working for all concerned."
