It's a new concept that fills a need.
ENGLEWOOD, TN (November 8, 2009) - According to Noel Jones, whose Frog Music Press is behind this new choir book, "Musicians are driven by wanting music. Famous musicians such as Bach risked their vision even as young children, copying music scores late into the night by candle light. It's a compulsion, almost an addiction to be able to create and recreate beauty day after day by singing or playing an instrument. But it takes music."
Photocopying copyrighted music is illegal but music can be hard to find and expensive to purchase. Many Catholic church musicians, many of them unpaid and without music budgets, are forced to stoop to making illegal copies, just to be able to have music for their choirs.
But can permitting photocopying serve a purpose without hurting sales? Noel Jones thinks so. "Anyone may go on our website and download and print as many copies of any of the pages of the Choirbook, or even the entire Choirbook. And we encourage them to copy, share the pages and give them away."
The rationale is this. Rather than make wanting music result in an illegal act for some, why not use the natural desire to make beautiful music work to publicize a business?
So The Catholic Choirbook 1 may be downloaded and printed for free. At the bottom of each page is a link to the website. Will this be enough to make this a profitable venture? Jones thinks so. "At less that $10 a copy when buying more than one, it's more affordable to order from us than having the Choirbook copied at your local copy shop, much less bound. So it's cost-effective to order and buy from us. And every photocopied page floating around out there carries a little advertisement for us."
Where this really makes a difference is in the church where there is no money for music. A choir director can make copies from their computer and printer of just the music they need from the Choirbook and finally have the same access to great Catholic music as the large, well-funded Catholic church music programs do.
This is Volume I, there are four planned for the series. They all combine choral arrangements of traditional Catholic hymns with great choral music of the Church including music for unison, two parts and four parts.
Frog Music Press also publishes Catholic Hymnals and a popular book on Gregorian Chant, A Beginner's Guide To Reading Gregorian Chant Notation. All books and music by Frog Music Press may be purchases at Amazon.com or your local Catholic bookstore.
