AFM'S FEDERAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT INTRODUCED IN SENATE

Senate Introduction of AFM's Marriage Amendment Comes As Massachusetts Decision Produces Over 100 Bipartisan Cosponsors For Same Amendment Introduced By AFM In House

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Alliance for Marriage today celebrated the news that AFM's Federal Marriage Amendment has been introduced in the Senate by Senators Allard, Sessions and Brownback. "Today's introduction of AFM's marriage amendment in the Senate is more confirmation that our momentum is growing in response to the recent court decision striking down the marriage laws of Massachusetts," said Matt Daniels, president of the Alliance for Marriage.

"Americans believe that gays and lesbians have a right to live as they choose, but they don't have a right to redefine marriage for our entire society," Daniels stated. "And Americans want our laws to send a positive message to children about marriage, family and their future."

"The Alliance for Marriage drafted the Federal Marriage Amendment and has introduced our text with bi-partisan sponsorship in two successive sessions of Congress in order to protect marriage as embraced by most Americans of every race, color and creed," Daniels added. "AFM's marriage amendment is needed because the recent Massachusetts decision will lead to more activist lawsuits bringing constitutional challenges to all of our state and federal marriage laws."

THE AFM FEDERAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT (H.J.Res. 56) Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any State, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.

The first sentence of AFM's amendment embodies the strong consensus of a vast majority of Americans that marriage is uniquely the union of male and female. The second sentence ensures that state legislatures - not the courts - will continue to decide all issues related to the allocation of marital benefits. AFM's Federal Marriage Amendment has no impact at all on the benefits offered by private businesses and corporations to their employees.

The Alliance for Marriage is a non-partisan, multicultural coalition whose Board of Advisors includes Rev. Walter Fauntroy -- the former DC Coordinator for the March on Washington for Martin Luther King Jr. -- as well as other civil rights and religious leaders, and national legal experts.
