FEINSTEIN TO NATION'S LARGEST CHURCH:
"HELP WANTED, CATHOLICS NEED NOT APPLY"

(SACRAMENTO) - Ray Flynn, president of Your Catholic Voice and former United States Ambassador to the Vatican, today expressed disappointment that California Senator Diane Feinstein sided with the Senate Judiciary Committee's "extremist anti-Catholics" in voting against Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor's confirmation to the federal bench.

Nominated to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, it became evident during Pryor's confirmation hearing that several senators opposed him because he is a faithful Catholic. These senators' anti-Catholic bias was so evident that Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch of Utah felt compelled to ask Pryor his religion because, "I felt [the anti-Catholics] were attacking his religion... They were attacking his Catholic beliefs... And you know, it's getting so that a pro-life Catholic can't serve in the federal judiciary."

"General Pryor has a stellar record as a litigator and jurist," said Flynn. "He is qualified and has consistently shown a determination to uphold the law, even when he doesn't agree with it. Therefore, I can only surmise it is religious bias that led these senators to vote against this good man. I have known and respected Sen. Feinstein for many years. I am disappointed she would go along with this extremist, anti-Catholic bigotry.

"To deny Bill Pryor a seat on the Appeals Court primarily because he is a faithful Catholic is bigotry pure and simple," Flynn said. "It seems evident that by her vote, Sen. Feinstein has said with respect to the judiciary, 'Help Wanted: Catholics Need Not Apply.'"
