Freedom Reveals the Fruits of the Theology of the Body

West Chester, Penn. (February 16, 2009) -- If the biblical adage, "by their fruits you will know them" is true then Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body is a work of epic evangelization proportions because of the renewal of faith that hundreds of thousands of Christians worldwide are experiencing.

Characterized by many as the late pope's "masterwork," the Theology of the Body has come a long way since it was first delivered to the universal Church via the pope's Wednesday audiences during the first five years of his pontificate. How this teaching is reaching the hearts and minds of everyday-Christians is chronicled in the newly-released book, Freedom: Twelve Lives Transformed by the Theology of the Body.

"The Theology of the Body offers an extraordinary lens through which we can see the world and our very lives," explains Matthew Pinto, who compiled and edited the stories in Freedom. "People of faith are seeing that this teaching is more than simply a compelling articulation of theological principles, but rather the overarching Catholic sacramental worldview, where reality is seen through the Incarnation and its radical ramifications." Pinto explains that the God of Christianity is not "a semi-interested, aloof deity but so loved humanity that he became one of us--and this incarnation has dramatic consequences in how we see and live in the world."

These life-altering consequences were experienced first-hand by the contributors to Freedom. Catholic and non-Catholic alike, they share a common story of struggle and victory, pain and joy as they seek the truth that will set them free. From a thrice-divorced future Catholic evangelist to a world-renowned Catholic scholar, to a leading staff member at Focus on the Family, Freedom "contains stories that will speak to virtually every heart and every life situation through the common thread of woundedness that every human has or will experience," says Pinto.

The Catholic sacramental worldview has particular application to human sexuality, the fundamental building block of civilization. "As sex goes, so goes the world," explains Pinto. "If we get sex wrong, there can be eternal consequences, literally." Pinto explains that, although the Theology of the Body is not just about sex, the one-flesh union of man and woman is a primary, perhaps the primary, lens through which we see the world. According to John Paul II, this union is a foreshadowing of the eternal union that all of humanity will experience in heaven.

"Freedom will inspire hope for those in despair, provide comfort for those in need of healing, and give purpose and meaning to those who feel lost," explains Christopher West, who wrote the foreword to the book. "Above all, Freedom shows how living the Theology of the Body provides a path to true happiness and authentic liberty. This teaching has had a remarkable impact in our world, and these first fruits are just the beginning."
