Life-Size Crucifix Based on Shroud of Tourin

Life-size Crucifix Provides Lenten Reflections on Suffering of Christ:

ANTHEM, AZ (FEBRUARY 12, 2009) - This life-size crucifix, based on the wounds evidenced within the Shroud of Tourin, will be placed behind the altar on a 12-ft. wood cross at St. Steven Catholic Church in Sun Lakes, Arizona. This timely addition of a life-size crucifix will be the most prominent addition to St. Steven' sanctuary. "It is a figurative and realistic representation of Our Lord's crucifixion. Scientific, historical evidence suggests that there were most likely many more wounds that Jesus suffered, but this sculpture is intended to remind all of us that His physical suffering was intense and covered all parts of His body," said sculptor Carlos Ayala.

This crucifix is the latest life-size sculpture of artist Carlos Ayala. Ayala, professional artist for the past 25 years, is a resident of Anthem, Arizona and works from his art studio in New River, Arizona. His numerous other noteworthy sculptures have been placed in many prominent public places in Arizona; Omaha, Nebraska; Michigan; Wisconsin; California; Florida. This sculpture was a commission from parishoners at St. Steven Catholic Church. Funds are still being raised to complete the commission, but St. Steven's is hoping to gain the necessary funds to be able to install and venerate the sculpture Good Friday, 2009.

Catholic Artist's Career in Art Commissions:

The exquisite detail, precision and realism in Carlos' artwork has earned quite a reputation among art collectors and enthusiasts. Since coming to the U.S. in 1985, Carlos Ayala has consistently worked in the creation of commissioned sculpture. He has created monumental sculptures for such noteworthy institutions as Ave Maria University in Naples, Florida; St. Edward's on the Lake Catholic Church in Lakeport, Michigan; Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio; Wesley Bolin Plaza at the Arizona State Capitol Building; St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska; St. Anne Catholic Church in Gilbert, Arizona; St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Phoenix, Arizona; St. Timothy Catholic Church in Mesa, Arizona and many more.

Artist's Biography of Survival and Blessings

Carlos' earliest beginnings set the stage for a life of trial. Born as the eighth child of ten to a poverty stricken family in central Mexico, Carlos has had to work very hard to overcome great obstacles. Both of Carlos' parents died when he was just four years old. He grew up in a unique orphanage named Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos located outside of Mexico City. After becoming a part of this unique family of orphaned children, Carlos received an education and thrived in this secure and loving environment. At age 16, Carlos' determination to become an artist drove him to leave the security of the orphanage to pursue a career in fine-art. He received a five-year degree in Fine Arts from Bellas Artes, the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico, D.F., Mexico's premier art school.

A Career of Giving Back

Carlos received an invitation to come to the United States in 1986 to continue his studies and work on his career in art here in the U.S. His first sculpture, after moving to the U.S., was a 7 ft. bronze of "The Risen Christ". It was a commission for the Shrine of St. Joseph in Yarnell, Arizona. This first commission opened the door for an over twenty-year career in commissioned artwork. The themes of his artwork have at their foundation the foundations of life itself. Each piece of artwork that Carlos creates is an expression of gratitude and celebration for the gift of life. It is his wish that each person realize the gifts of life that surround us and are renewed with each new day. Life is something that Carlos does not take for granted. He celebrates life through the creation and expression of his artwork.

Artist as Husband and Father

Carlos and his wife Wendy have been married for over eighteen years. Their family continues to grow as they have been blessed with six sons (Luke, Christopher, Andrew, Brendan, John, and David) ranging in age from 2 to 14 years.
