Catholic World Mission's Annual Fund Drive Gets Underway

HAMDEN, CT (OCTOBER 31, 2008) - Providing education for the poor in Latin America is one long-term Catholic World Mission solution to the rampant poverty in that area of the world. Providing food and clothing, though necessary steps, will not help to overcome the disastrous circumstances that most of the poor live in daily. These actions only address immediate needs among so many long-term ones. Education however, is vital and life-changing for the long-term and provides the necessary leg-up that these families need to transform their world.

Pope Benedict XVI has made public the appreciation he has for those who take seriously the call to become Servants and Apostles of Christ among the poorest of our brothers and sisters. "I thank them for the support they offer to all the Communities, especially the young ones," he reminded us, in his yearly call to action on World Mission Sunday.

Catholic World Mission wants to help you answer our Holy Father's call to serve Christ in the poor, especially the "young ones". This year we are excited to invite each one of you to do for these little ones, by sponsoring the education of a needy boy or girl. The Catholic World Mission response to our Holy Father's call to action is our Annual Fund Drive Action Item: our Mano Amiga Child Sponsorship Program.

Our Mano Amiga educational program has a proven record of success because it addresses foundational areas to help the poor transform their lives: providing solid education and building strong families. Mano Amiga education offers not only solid academics to our school children, but practical skill building programs for their parents, working to instill a sense of success - a means to build stronger families.

Since opening our doors in 1963, we have witnessed the transformation of entire slums into middle class neighborhoods - only 10 to 20 years later. Presently 28 schools serve the needy in our hemisphere. Over 9,000 of these children need your support to receive an education that will make a lifetime of difference.
