Olmsted Statement on Catholics in the Voting Booth Reaches Over 105,000 Catholic Voters

Evidence exists that it may help swing election in Arizona

IRVING, TX (OCTOBER 24, 2008) - Basilica Press announced today that Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix has released the second edition of Catholics in the Public Square, his groundbreaking treatment of ballot box issues from a Catholic perspective, and that it has been distributed to 107,500 Catholic voters in the Phoenix and Gallup dioceses. The diocese handed out another 100,000 in 2006.

There is evidence to suggest that it is already having an impact.

In this pocket-sized book, Olmsted shows how Catholics can influence the nation and the political process in light of their faith. New topics in the booklet include questions relating to the responsibilities of Catholic institutions and business people, immigration concerns, and other matters.

He also writes of the non-negotiable issues for Catholics involved in politics, including abortion, marriage, embryonic stem cell research, and euthanasia.

Abortion and traditional marriage have been particularly hot topics in this year's election. Arizona, California, and Florida, for instance, all have ballot measures to enshrine traditional marriage in their constitutions. In Arizona, internal polling done by traditional marriage proponents shows that Catholics in the Public Square is driving up support for traditional marriage.

When asked why he re-released the book now, Bishop Olmsted said, "Not to act when our neighbor's life or the foundation of the family is at stake, as in the case of not attempting to protect unborn children threatened by abortion or to protect the institution of marriage, is a particularly grave scandal of omission. Jesus said, 'Things that cause sin will inevitably occur, but woe to the person through whom they occur'" (Lk 17:1).
