Litany of St. Thomas More to be prayed at all Masses in Delaware and Maryland's Eastern Shore.

WILMINGTON, DE (October 20, 2008) - The Most Reverend W. Francis Malooly, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, has asked all parishes in the diocese to pray a special prayer titled, The Litany of St. Thomas More, Martyr, and Patron Saint of Statesmen, Politicians and Lawyers, at the conclusion of all Saturday and Sunday Masses in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland on October 25 and 26, 2008. The Litany was written in 2004 by Bishop Malooly's predecessor, Bishop Michael A. Saltarelli, to ask St. Thomas More for his intercession for all politicians that they may be courageous and effective in defending and promoting the sanctity of human life at all stages.

In his statement asking Catholics to pray The Litany, Bishop Malooly noted that, "Since (Bishop Saltarelli issued the prayer), The Litany has been prayed by Senators and Representatives in the Halls of Congress. Our Saint Thomas More Society of dedicated Catholic lawyers prays it at the conclusion of their Red Mass and Spring Banquet. A University of Delaware engineering professor prays The Litany with his family every night in October, Respect Life Month. One of our Catholic high school religion teachers reports that the sentence 'Intercede for our Statesmen, Politicians, Judges and Lawyers, that they be courageous and effective in their defense and promotion of the sanctity of human life - the foundation of all other human rights' has had a powerful formational effect on his students."

Bishop Malooly also said, "The defense and promotion of the sanctity of human life is the foundation of any promotion of human rights and all efforts to serve the poor. Together, with courage and perseverance, we continue to fight for the right to life of all human beings from conception until natural death. It is a fight Christians have waged since the very beginning of the Church in the First Century A.D. and is the greatest civil rights battle of our time."

A litany is a prayer in the form of petitions and responses. The early Christian Church adapted this form of prayer from Jewish worship tradition; calling these alternating prayers a litany from the Greek litaneia, meaning "a humble and fervent appeal."

The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington was established in 1868 and comprises 57 parishes, 19 missions and 35 schools serving the State of Delaware and the nine counties of Maryland's Eastern Shore.
