A Traditional Pilgrimage to Canada's Oldest Marian Shrine

CAP DE LA MADELEINE, Quebec (27 August 2008) - Nestled along the St. Lawrence River in Quebec lies Canada's very first Marian shrine and oldest church, Sanctuaire Notre-Dame-Du-Cap (Our Lady of the Cape Shrine). This Friday evening at 8:00PM (EST), August 29th, pilgrims from Canada and the United States will meet at Saint Joseph's Church in Lanoraie, to begin this 100 km camping pilgrimage on foot over three days. The pilgrims will rise at 6:00AM to begin the first day of the pilgrimage on Saturday, 30 August. Many pilgrims unable to make the rigorous and entire 100km enjoy participating with the Family Chapter.

Every day offers the pilgrims many graces in the way of Mass and Confession in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Along the scenic river to Trois-Rivieres, the pilgrims march in chapters and pray, sing, and offer their sacrifices to Our Lady of the Cape. As in the past, the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter is pleased to provide two chaplains for the spiritual needs of the pilgrims speaking either French or English.

The pilgrimage will end with a Solemn High Mass at the Shrine on Monday, 1:00PM. The Mass will be accompanied by music in the form of Gregorian Chant and polyphonic selections sung by the Youth Schola of Saint Clement's Parish in Ottawa.

About Sanctuaire Notre-Dame-Du-Cap (Our Lady of the Cape Shrine)
The Sanctuaire Notre-Dame-Du-Cap is home to North America's first shrine to Our Lady. It is also the location of the oldest extant church in Canada, dating from 1714. While work was being done on a second church in March of 1879, it was necessary to transport the necessary stone materials across the nearby river. Unfortunately, there was no bridge. However, after the parishioners prayed to Our Lady, the river froze in the springtime in a strip sufficiently wide to allow workers to transport the stone. A statue of Our Lady was later placed in the original church. On June 22, 1888, the night of the church's dedication, the statue opened up its eyes to the amazement of Father Luc DĂ©silets and two other witnesses. Today, this miraculous statue today is known as Our Lady of the Cape.

About the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter
Established in 1988 by Pope John Paul II, the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter is a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right. The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter strives to serve the Catholic Church by means of its own particular and specific role or objective, i.e. the sanctification of priests through the faithful celebration of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Through the spiritual riches of the Church's ancient Roman liturgy, the priests of the Fraternity seek to sanctify those entrusted to their care. The Priestly Fraternity instructs and trains its priests to preserve, promote, and protect the Catholic Church's authentic liturgical and spiritual traditions. The Fraternity has nearly 200 priests and over 100 seminarians studying in its two international seminaries in Bavaria, Germany and Denton, Nebraska.
