Catholic Relief Services Supports Emergency Response in Southern Philippines

BALTIMORE, MD, (August 13, 2008) - Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has committed an initial $25,000 to support relief operations in the southern Philippines, where as many as 160,000 people were reported displaced from their homes on Monday after fighting erupted between government forces and Islamic separatists.

While the escalation of the decades-old conflict between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) was feared to create a humanitarian emergency in Central Mindanao, news reports indicate that some of the displaced have been able to return to their homes.

CRS is working closely with its local Caritas partners in the region to assess the needs of people affected by the conflict, and plans to support the Archdiocese of Cotabato with the distribution of food and necessary non-food items to approximately 1,500 people. Further evaluations and needs assessments are also underway, and CRS will adjust its response accordingly. Meanwhile, CRS continues to focus its efforts on the peace process in the Mindanao region.

"This outbreak of hostilities is a very disappointing setback in the peace process. Hopefully, the situation will stabilize so we can resume peacebuilding measures," says Mike Frank, CRS' Country Representative for the Philippines.

By working closely with the Catholic Church, Caritas network, various organizations and supportive local and national politicians, CRS is preparing to initiate a peace advocacy campaign urging both sides to stop the fighting. Plans are also underway to launch a massive information drive to increase public awareness of the peace process.

CRS continues its support of the Archdiocese of Cotabato, where more than 70,000 people were affected by severe flooding in June after Typhoon Frank ravaged the region and caused severe destruction of homes, infrastructure and crop land.

CRS has been working in the Philippines continuously since 1945, when it launched relief and reconstruction efforts in the wake of the Second World War. While CRS continues to provide relief to victims of natural and man-made emergencies, it has evolved into a premier development agency that supports ongoing programs in Peace and Reconciliation, Health, Enterprise Development, and Agriculture/Natural Resource Management.
