Pedro Rubalcava Hopes New Collection Will Unite Diverse Parishes in Prayer

PORTLAND, OR (JUNE 16, 2008) - The first bilingual setting of morning, evening and night prayer is now available from OCP. Pedro Rubalcava's Mi Boca Proclamará Tu Alabanza/My Mouth Will Proclaim Your Praise offers just about everything you need to sing the Liturgy of the Hours (in an adapted format). This new resource will advance the prayer life of bilingual parishes and those attending conferences, diocesan gatherings, and other events.

"A growing number U.S. parishes are celebrating Masses in Spanish and in English. The challenge is bringing the two communities together to share faith and prayer," says Rubalcava. "My experience as a bilingual and bicultural pastoral musician and composer led me to create these songs for liturgical prayer outside the Eucharist. I once again found myself drawn to the rich texts that are the psalms and canticles. The sounds that resulted are melodies and rhythms shaped by my experience as a person of faith who is constantly seeking the holy. That's what formed this collection."

Mi Boca Proclamará Tu Alabanza includes introductory verses, hymns, psalmody, canticles, responsories, Gospel canticles, intercessions, and more. Extremely versatile, it allows for singing the office entirely in English, entirely in Spanish, or bilingually. Users can even sing the verses in one language then echo or respond in the other.

Designed especially to help diverse parish groups join together to sanctify the day, all three liturgies feature psalms and canticles from the first Sunday in the four-week cycle. The songbook contains assembly editions and keyboard, guitar and vocal parts for all 20 songs. Some titles also have choral and solo instrument parts.

These new songs are accessible to the resources of any community. Produced by Cyprian Consiglio, OSB Cam, the CD makes a good learning tool as well as accompaniment for small group and individual reflection. The disc features Pedro and talented singer Anna Betancourt on lead vocals throughout.

"The importance for me is always to pray the songs, deepen my understanding of the presence of God in my life, and sing in the spirit of the psalmist," says Rubalcava. "Once I can pray these songs, my next task is to lead others in prayer with them. It is my hope that people who use these, whether in English or in Spanish (or bilingually), can learn to express faith and pray together in the Liturgy of the Hours--and beyond--to a space and time where language will not matter."
