STOCKBRIDGE, MASS., APRIL 11, 2007 -- Father Anthony Gramlich, MIC, the new Rector of the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, is preparing to welcome several thousand visitors this weekend to one of the country's largest Divine Mercy Sunday celebrations.
It's offically spring in the Berkshires, and preparations have begun for the annual Divine Mercy Weekend celebration at the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Mass., on April 14-15.
This week at the Shrine, tents are going up, floors are being waxed, and pews are being polished -- all in preparation for the several thousand pilgrims that take part in the annual celebration, one of the largest such Divine Mercy celebrations in North America.
All are welcome to attend. The two-day celebration includes Masses, speakers, music, and presentations.
Divine Mercy Sunday is the Second Sunday of the Easter season. It was named by Pope John Paul II at the canonization of St. Maria Faustina on April 30, 2000, and then officially decreed by the Vatican.
Jesus revealed in various revelations to St. Faustina in the 1930s that it was His desire that we celebrate this special feast. He told St. Faustina: "The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy" (Diary of St. Faustina, 699).
Our Lord revealed to St. Faustina His desire to literally flood us with His graces on that day. Just consider each of the promises and desires that He expressed about Divine Mercy Sunday, which are recorded in the main passage of the Diary -- passage 699 -- about Divine Mercy Sunday.
The Marians of the Immaculate Conception, who administer the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy, have played a key role in spreading The Divine Mercy message and devotion throughout the world. That was acknowledged by Pope John Paul II in a Papal Blessing on Oct. 5, 2001. The Holy Father told the Marians to "be Apostles of The Divine Mercy under the maternal and loving guidance of Mary ..."
At this year's Divine Mercy Sunday Mass, Cardinal Adam Maida, the Archbishop of Detroit, will be the guest celebrant and the homilist. The Mass begins at 1 p.m. Cardinal Maida serves as president of the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C.
Says Fr. Anthony Gramlich, MIC, Rector of the Shrine. "It is a great honor to have Cardinal Maida celebrate this year's Divine Mercy Sunday. The message of Divine Mercy is not only for pilgrims, but also for cardinals, bishops and priests. My wish is that the Cardinal will not only be a minister of mercy on the Feast of Divine Mercy, but also experience in the depths of his being the grace of Divine Mercy. Divine Mercy is for everyone!"
As for the Shrine's weekend celebration, pilgrims will have the opportunity to pray inside the Shrine. Confessions will be heard in many languages. And tents will be set up for Enrollments and Masses, our Association magazines, Club newsletters, Hospitality, and the Gift Shop.
After praying inside the Shrine and visiting some of the tents, pilgrims will also have the opportunity to light votive candles for special intentions in the Immaculate Conception Candle Shrine at the Lourdes Grotto.
