South Orange, NJ - MARCH 19, 2007 - Everyone agrees that western society is increasingly secularized, yet intellectuals, religious leaders and people of faith remain confused and often at odds about the role that faith and values should and do play in shaping human sexual relations today. Church teachings about human sexuality are often misunderstood or misrepresented. In response to confusion over issues such as these, Seton Hall University, together with the Order of Malta, has organized the Catholic Perspectives Lecture Series titled "A Question of Clarity" to delve beyond the politics and sensationalism and shed light on one of the most pressing moral issues of our day. The third lecture in this series, on April 11 at 6:30 p.m, titled Human Sexuality, features two nationally known theologians, one male and one female, for a stimulating discussion that is free and open to the public. Advance registration is requested by phone, (973) 378-2600, or e-mail, universityevents@shu.edu.

Christopher Klofft is an expert in the relationship between sexual ethics and the virtues, the role of the body in moral theology and the place of sexual pleasure in Christian sexual ethics. A Knight in the Order of Malta, he is a professor of theology at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Janet Smith is serving a second term as a consultant to the Pontifical Council on the Family. A professor of life ethics at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Smith is the author of Humanae Vitae: A Generation Later. Over a million copies of her seminal talk "Contraception: Why Not," have been distributed.

"As a Catholic University, we have a multifaceted mission to reach out to the community and to explore the importance of faith where it intersects with knowledge, academic research and everyday life," explains Father Anthony Ziccardi, executive director of mission and ministry at Seton Hall. "The third lecture in our Catholic Perspectives Lecture Series devoted to human sexuality will provide a dynamic forum for discussing the issues."

The Catholic Perspectives Lecture Series is the New Jersey Area of the Order of Malta's first collaboration with an academic institution. Robert Fredericks, New Jersey area chair of the Order, says, "We were eager to work with such a premier University as Seton Hall. We hope the lecture series brings to the fore some of the more pressing questions and increases understanding."

All lectures in the series are free and open to the public and take place at 6:30 p.m. in Jubilee Hall Auditorium on Seton Hall University's South Orange, New Jersey campus.

About the Order of Malta
Founded as early as the 1070s by blessed Brother Gerard as a hostel to care for sick pilgrims visiting the Holy Land, the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, better known today as the Order of Malta, is a lay, pontifical, exempt religious order of the Roman Catholic Church.

Because of the necessities of the times and following the successful capture of Jerusalem by the first crusade in 1099, the Order of Saint John took up arms in defense of Christendom and for hundreds of years opposed the spread of Islam from its bases in Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta while always maintaining its hospitaller functions of caring for the sick and the poor. The Order established hospitals in Rhodes and Malta with the latter reputedly being the most advanced for its time in Europe.

Today the Order of Malta concentrates solely on its dual charism of care for the sick and the poor and witness to the Roman Catholic faith. Presided over by the Prince and Grand Master, Fr. Andrew Bertie, the Order maintains hospitaller activities in some 110 countries throughout the world. With the dignity of a cardinal, the Grand Master, in his capacity as head of a religious order, reports directly to the pope. He is also head of a sovereign state which currently maintains diplomatic relations with 94 countries. The Order of Malta, a permanent observer at the United Nations, is the oldest order of chivalry in the world and is considered to be the founder of the modern hospital and ambulance corps.
