Researchers Replicate Shroud of Turin

Researchers Replicate Shroud of Turin Columbus, Ohio, June 1, 2001 For the first time in history, empirical evidence is available demonstrating the successful replication of the process that created the image on the Holy Shroud of Turin. The image formation process resulted in what appears to be an "infinity" symbol, which is often cited as a representation of God who is "the alpha and omega" (Rev. 1:8). Within the infinity symbol was found a subdued micro-image of the Shroud face. Although not as resolute as the full-size version, the micro-image also contains some 3-D characteristics (photos available). According to the researcher in charge of the work, M. Sue Benford, Ph.D., R.N., "The most profound aspect of our findings is that they were created only using things that would only have been available to Jesus at the time of the original Shroud image formation, e.g., a tomb, strong focused intention, and the Holy Spirit. We used no chemicals, radiation, or other such physical additives. It truly is miraculous." The experimental sample has been independently analyzed at The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio) and found to exhibit the exact characteristics as the image fibers on the Shroud including the existence of high levels of calcium in the image areas, which cannot be explained in either Benford's sample or the actual Shroud. Although the 1988 Carbon-14 dating of the Shroud reported a medieval date of between 1260-1390 A.D., Benford and her partner, former Catholic Priest and Benedictine Monk Joseph Marino, presented compelling information last year to show that the sample used by the labs contained a "patch" from the 16th Century. Photographs of the uncut C-14 sample, and one of the sub samples, were blindly analyzed by a European-trained weaver who reported, "there is no question that there is different material on each side of the weave pattern. It is definitely a patch!" He explained that medieval European weavers would typically try to match the original cloth and then hand-stitch the new material into the old such that it was invisible to all but the trained observer. But why do this? Considering the C-14 sample had been excised adjacent to a previously removed area of the cloth (5 ½" x 3 ½" in size), this restoration would have been required to maintain both integrity and aesthetic consistency of the revered woven artifact. However, the patch was not an identical match; thus, even untrained observers can readily see the disparities between the two materials in the C-14 sample (photos available). Two other textile labs corroborate the weaver's observations. Further undeniable support for this theory comes from the statistical analysis of the dates obtained by each of the three AMS Labs as they relate to the distance to the edge of the cloth. The angle revealed by "connecting the dots" matches exactly with the observable angle delineating the two disparate weave patterns in the C-14 sample. The researchers believe this new evidence lends significant credence to the theory that the Shroud could have been the actual burial cloth of Jesus.
