Dr. Christopher Kaczor meets popular misconceptions head-on
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 26, 2012) – The first words of THE SEVEN BIG MYTHS ABOUT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH do not belong to author and Catholic philosopher Dr. Christopher Kaczor. They come from Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen:
“There are not more than 100 people in the world who truly hate the Catholic Church,” Sheen said, “but there are millions who hate what they perceive to be the Catholic Church.”
Misconceptions, inaccurate perceptions and – yes – myths have colored opinions of the Church literally since Jesus walked among us. In THE SEVEN BIG MYTHS ABOUT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, published by Ignatius Press, Kaczor distinguishes fact from fiction regarding what the Church actually does believe ... and teach.
“This book – is written to help dispel common myths that people believe about the Catholic Church,” Kaczor writes, “particularly about certain controversial questions that are significant today.”
“In the contemporary world, misinformation and myth abound in reference to certain key issues,” he writes. “Everyone ‘knows’ the Church opposes happiness, freedom and science. Everyone ‘knows’ the Church hates women and homosexuals. Everyone ‘knows’ contraception enhances love, and opposition to same-sex marriage is based on bigotry.”
Early reviews suggest that Kaczor has created an instant classic in SEVEN BIG MYTHS.
“Christopher Kaczor is one of our finest young Catholic philosophers,” said Most Rev. José H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles. “In THE SEVEN BIG MYTHS ABOUT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, he shows that he is also one of our finest defenders of the Catholic faith. This is essential reading for the new evangelization.”
“In this galvanizing book, Prof. Christopher Kaczor demolishes with calm, steady, remorseless logic seven of today’s most toxic prejudices against the Faith,” said Fr. Ronald K. Tacelli, S.J., author of Handbook of Catholic Apologetics. “Every seminary, every RCIA program, every parish effort in continuing education should make THE SEVEN BIG MYTHS ABOUT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH required reading.”
“This book is myth-busting at its best about the things that matter most,” said Catholic Answers Live host Patrick Coffin. “Listen up. He knows what he’s talking about – and so will you.”
“All of this book is full of clarity and charity, but two chapters are masterpieces, each worth 10 times the price of the whole book,” said Dr. Peter Kreeft of Boston College. “The chapter on contraception is the most simple, commonsensical, winsome and persuasive I have ever seen. It could have been written only by a very good and wise husband and father. The chapter on same-sex marriage has the clearest and the completest logic I have ever read on the subject.”
Kaczor is professor of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He graduated from the Honors Program of Boston College (1992) and holds a Ph.D. (1996) from the University of Notre Dame. He also did post-doctoral work in Germany. His books include The Ethics of Abortion: Women's Rights, Human Life, and the Question of Justice; O Rare Ralph McInerny: Stories and Reflections on a Legendary Notre Dame Professor; Thomas Aquinas on the Cardinal Virtues; Life Issues-Medical Choices; Thomas Aquinas on Faith, Hope, and Love; The Edge of Life: Human Dignity and Contemporary Bioethics; Proportionalism and the Natural Law Tradition; and How to Stay Catholic in College.
Kaczor’s research on issues of ethics, philosophy, and religion has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, the “Huffington Post,” “National Review,” NPR, BBC, EWTN, ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, MSNBC, and NBC’s “The Today Show.”
