Franciscan University Receives "Top Tier" U.S. News & World Report Ranking

STEUBENVILLE, OH (September 23, 2011) - For the 11th consecutive year, Franciscan University of Steubenville received a top-tier ranking in America's Best Colleges, published by U.S. News & World Report.
Among the highlights in the Midwest Universities division in which Franciscan University is rated alongside 146 colleges and universities:
• Fanciscan University is ranked 8th best for Freshman Retention Rate, and in the top 10 percent among Midwest universities for Overall Graduation Rate.
• Sixty-one percent of Franciscan University freshmen were in the top 25 percent of their high school class.
• The average Franciscan SAT score is in the 75th percentile, meaning Franciscan students score better than 75 percent of those taking the SAT nationally.
These measures of academic excellence, along with academic reputation, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, and alumni giving form the core of the U.S. News ranking formula.
"We are honored to be consistently ranked among the best public and private universities in the U.S.," said Joel Recznik, vice president for Enrollment.
"Our high freshman retention rate shows that students who begin their education at Franciscan like what they experience and want to return here to continue their studies."
In addition to the high SAT scores highlighted in America's Best Colleges, Recznik notes that the average ACT score for Franciscan students this year is over 25, which is 20 percent higher than the national average of 21.

"The America's Best Colleges confirms that Franciscan University attracts students who want to excel academically as they experience the rich Catholic faith environment for which Franciscan is so well known."
The 2012 college guide also ranked Franciscan University's study-abroad program as one of the top programs in the U.S.--placing it in the top 1 percent among all schools in the "Most Students Studying Abroad" category.
Each semester, 175 Franciscan students study and live in the center of Europe at a restored 14th-century Carthusian monastery in Gaming, Austria.
"We live in a global environment," noted Recznik. "It is becoming increasingly important for students to have an international perspective as part of their overall education. Our study-abroad program introduces students to the culture and heritage of Europe, and the international business world, while immersing them in the Catholic faith experience of Europe and Rome."
