Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters partners with Chivas USA to honor Mentors of the Year

Carson, CA (September 14, 2011) - Chivas USA, in conjunction with the Junior Associate Board of Directors of Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters (CBBBS), are holding the second annual BIG Night Out to honor the 2011 "Bigs of the Year". The event is scheduled on October 2 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
The signature event recognizes the volunteer mentors (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) and highlights the impact they make in these children's lives. The goals of BIG Night Out are to celebrate the mission and backbone of the organization--the volunteers and the families it serves--as well as garner resources to match more children in meaningful one-to-one, professionally supported mentoring friendships with positive role models.
Backed by studies proving its effectiveness, Big Brothers Big Sisters holds itself accountable for helping children of single, low-income or incarcerated parents stay in school; avoid risky and delinquent behaviors; and have higher self-esteem and aspirations. BIG Night Out gives the volunteers and supporters a chance to enjoy a major league soccer game with the Chivas USA team, receive awards and scholarships for graduating Littles, and introduce the organization's supporters to the Big/Little matches and professional staff.
"We congratulate and celebrate our annual Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the year. They are the best of the best of the caring, committed volunteers who help children who are facing adversity to succeed," said Ken Martinet, president and chief executive officer of Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters. "Our professional staff seeks to match and support Big Brothers and Sisters with Little Brothers and Sisters in long-term mentoring relationships. Our 'Bigs of the Year' have succeeded in providing the proper amount of time, consistency and direction required to help their mentees improve academically; make positive choices; and assist them in achieving their life's hopes."
A Big Brother with Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mike Trueblood, an 81 year-old tennis Hall of Famer, recently won the 2011 Big Brother of the Year award out of 240,000 volunteers from across the nation.
Joe Boskovich, Jr., along with co-Chair Annemarie Dillard, have been successful in producing the unique event and engaging star sports figures to support the youth and volunteers in the 85 year old, award-winning Los Angeles program. Ms. Dillard was able to coordinate the post-game involvement of Chivas USA star players to meet and mingle with the Little Brothers and Sisters, who often face common risk factors including living in a household that is either poor or low income, living in foster care or with a single parent, or having an incarcerated parent. "I have never seen kids so well behaved as these children," says Dillard, "and it's evident that their Big Brothers and Sisters are a major reason for their good behavior."

Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent and low-income families or households where a parent is incarcerated. Headquartered in Los Angeles and a part of a network about 370 agencies across the country, Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters serves over 1,000 children and their families, and volunteers.
