National Leader to Speak on Morality and the Market

STEUBENVILLE, OH (September 7, 2011) - Father Robert Sirico, co-founder of the Acton Institute, which promotes "a free and virtuous society characterized by individual liberty and sustained by religious principles," will speak at Franciscan University of Steubenville on September 15. His speech, part of the University's Distinguished Speaker Series, titled, "Catholic Social Teaching: Developments, Insights, and Boundaries," will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Tony & Nina Gentile Gallery of the J.C. Williams Center.

Father Sirico, an internationally acclaimed author and spokesman on issues of economics, civil rights, and religious concerns, explained the philosophy of the Acton Institute, saying, "Economic freedom is essential to creating an environment in which religious freedom can flourish ... The market can function only when people behave morally. So faith and freedom must go hand in hand."

Sirico, who received an honorary doctorate in Christian ethics from Franciscan University in 1999, has been published on the topics of politics, economics, and social matters in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and numerous other publications. He has served as a prominent commentator on CNN, ABC, the BBC, NPR, EWTN, and 60 Minutes.

In 1990, Father Sirico founded the Michigan-based Acton Institute. Named for Lord Acton, an English politician and historian, the institute is based on his philosophies regarding economics and morality. Father Sirico founded the institute after observing what he considered to be a lack of training among Catholics in fundamental economic principles. He was also concerned that too few businesspeople were solidly grounded in religious and moral principles.

It was these very principles that brought Father Sirico himself back to the Church. After falling away from the faith in his youth, he returned and chose to join the priesthood after uncovering elemental truths regarding property rights, entrepreneurialism, and human dignity. He currently serves as pastor of St. Mary's Parish in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
