Over 20 Million Americans Affected by Depression

FALLSTON, MD (September 5, 2011) - As we enter National Suicide Prevention Week, September 4th-10th, it is important to understand that clinical depression can hit anyone at anytime. No one is exempt. However, understanding the early signs and symptoms of clinical depression in yourself and others is the first and most important step in treatment of mental illness and, ultimately, in the prevention of suicide.

Ever have the blues? Of course you have ... Haven't we all! You know how it goes--you have a tough day or two, or a few days and the mood passes over and you are back to your old self enjoying life again. However, the scenario is different in the face of clinical depression...

Statistics on Depression
Statistically, chances are that you either personally have lived with mental illness or clinical depression yourself, or you know someone close to you who does. The average age for onset of clinical depression is 30 years old. However, there is some variance among the onset age for various mental illnesses. According to the National Institutes on Health publication, "The Numbers Count: Mental Disorders in America," depression affects well over 20 million people in the USA alone. That translates into 9.5% of the adult population in the US over 18 years of age have some form of mood disorder (which includes depression and bipolar disorder).

Signs & Symptoms
When one experiences clinical depression, they may:
• Feel isolated and alone.
• Pull away from activities and other people, sleep excessively and become distant.
• Appear sad and/or anxious and cry often, even becoming irritable, making it difficult for others to reach them. It may also become difficult for them to focus and concentrate, making even simple daily activities like bathing, picking up the house and fixing dinner for the family difficult.
• Develop insomnia and changes in appetite, two very important signs of clinical depression.

If you or someone you know has these symptoms, regardless of age, and they last longer than 3 weeks, it may signal clinical depression and it is important to advise them to seek medical attention. If you know someone who is considering suicide, it must not be taken lightly. It is important to always err on the side of caution. If possible, encourage them to call their physician right away or to go to a hospital ER for treatment. Stay close and see it through, and do not leave the person alone as they are in crisis. In the event that the person is not willing to follow-through, take the initiative and call 911. They may very well need to be admitted to the hospital, depending on the results of a detailed ER assessment.

Hospital Emergency Rooms are well-trained to deal with this medical emergency, and the medications today are highly advanced, and effective in treating depression. Often medication is combined with talk therapy.

It is important to remember- depression is a treatable disease, particularly with early intervention.
