FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MEDIA ADVISORY

River Forest, IL (August 9, 2011) - Dominican University's Siena Center will offer this fall a number of thought-provoking lectures and programs revolving around the search for the deeper meaning, root causes and lasting implications of our shared history. Titled Looking Beyond the Horizon, the series will feature such prominent speakers as Eboo Patel, founder of the Interfaith Youth Core and a member of President Barack Obama's inaugural Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships; celebrated American novelist Mary Gordon; and George Coyne, S.J., astrophysicist, priest and president of the Vatican Observatory. Programs include the following:

Tuesday, September 6, 7:00 p.m., Priory Auditorium, $10
Kicking off the series is Maryann Cusimano Love, associate professor of international relations at The Catholic University of America, whose lecture "Peace Is Possible. Peace Is Practical" will address efforts toward achieving lasting peace in a post-9/11 world. With keen insight to the role of religious leaders and influences in the global political scene, Love will argue for the importance of interfaith engagement in U.S. foreign policy. She is the author of Beyond Sovereignty: Issues for Global Agenda and Morality Matters: Ethics and the War on Terrorism.

Thursday, October 27, 7:00 p.m., Martin Recital Hall, $10
Mary Gordon will present "Reading Jesus: How Story Shapes Us," reflecting upon her experiences writing Reading Jesus: A Writer's Encounter with the Gospels. Disturbed by the rise in worldwide fundamentalism, Gordon devoted two years of her life to reading the gospels the way one reads a book--but with a writer's eye. Delving into the writing, language and stories of the texts, Gordon will reveal the insights she gained during this journey. She is the author of several novels, novellas and story collections and is the Millicent C. McIntosh Professor in English and Writing at Barnard College. Her most recent novel, The Love of My Youth, was released this year.

Tuesday, November 1, 7:00 p.m., Martin Recital Hall, Free
Dominican's annual Lund-Gill Lecture will be presented by Eboo Patel, founding director of the Interfaith Youth Core and the university's 2011 Lund-Gill Chair in the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences. Patel's lecture, "Acts of Faith: Interfaith Leadership in a Time of Global Religious Crisis," will address interfaith leadership in a world too often convinced of the inevitability of intercultural unrest. Patel will reflect on the interfaith leadership examples of Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Dorothy Day, Abraham Joshua Heschel and others to provide a vision for leading communities of faith to work with people of other philosophical backgrounds toward the common good. Patel is a member of President Barack Obama's inaugural Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships and has shared his views at the TED Conference, the Clinton Global Initiative, the Nobel Peace Prize Forum and on his Washington Post blog, "The Faith Divide."
Tuesday, November 8, 5:30 p.m., Martin Recital Hall, Free
Jeanette Rodriguez, professor of theology at Seattle University, will present the 2011 Mazzuchelli Lecture, titled "Resistance, Faith and Social Change." The interdisciplinary lecture will examine the common "blood" that binds neighbor to neighbor and generation to generation. This connectedness derives much of its strength from cultural memory and is often rooted in religion. Rodriguez will examine the icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe as an example of a cultural memory that binds a people.

Thursday, November 17, 7:00 p.m., Priory Auditorium, $10
The Albertus Magnus lecture will be presented by George Coyne, S.J., president of the Vatican Observatory. As a preeminent astrophysicist and Jesuit priest, Coyne brings a unique perspective to tackling the perennial questions of the origins of life, the role of humans in the universe, and whether science supports or contradicts belief in a Creator God. Coyne will present the best scientific understanding of the universe and share fascinating photos from deep space.

Tuesday, November 29, 7:00 p.m., Priory Auditorium, $10
Edward Foley, Capuchin, the Duns Scotus Professor of Spirituality and professor of liturgy and music at Catholic Theological Union, will present Dominican's annual Advent Lecture. Foley will explore shifts in liturgical life being implemented in the English-speaking world as well as the many changes the Church continues to undergo under post-Vatican II leadership. He will also discuss the variant versions of the New English Translation of the Roman Missal and their origins.

The Siena Center's Albertus Magnus Society, a program exploring issues related to the intersection of religious belief and scientific insight, will sponsor two special events during the fall as part of its 2011-2012 series theme "Science, Salvation and Side Effects."

Tuesday, September 15, 7:30 p.m., Priory Auditorium, Free
Jame Schaefer, associate professor of theology and co-chair of Marquette University's Albertus Magnus Circle, will examine how believers envision their roles in an age of rapidly advancing technologies, some of which pose threats to humanity, others species and the earth.

Thursday, October 13, 7:00 p.m., Priory Auditorium, Free
In his lecture, "Discernment and Community in the Twitter Age," Trevor Bechtel will discuss the surprising approach to technology taken by the Amish and Mennonite communities as well as the positive role new technologies have played in forming dynamic communities, including the "Twitter Revolutions" in the Middle East in 2011. Drawing on his background as associate professor of religion at Bluffton University and as a former Mennonite pastor, Bechtel will propose "rules" for a discerning use of technology.

The Siena Center's 2011-2012 lectures are made possible in part by a gift from the Helen Brach Foundation.
