MEDIA ADVISORY
LOS ANGELES, CA (August 9, 2011) - A colorful outdoor Marian procession in downtown Los Angeles to celebrate and commemorate the 230th anniversary of the founding and dedication of the City of Los Angeles to Our Lady of the Angels is scheduled for Saturday, September 3rd, 2011, announced Mark Albert, Chairman of the Queen of Angels Foundation, the non-profit organization which is sole organizer of the first-time event in Los Angeles. The 2011 Marian Procession commences at 3:00 PM at Mission Nuestra Senora Reina de Los Angeles (La Placita) at 535 N. Main Street, LA ,downtown Los Angeles' oldest continuously operating Roman Catholic church, and will process to the Cathedral of Our Lady of The Angels for a 4:30 PM Rosary and a 5:00 PM Votive Mass presided over by Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik, pastor of The Cathedral of Our Lady of The Angeles. For information, visit: www.thequeenofangels.com.
The 2011 Marian procession, designed in the large-scale international tradition of public outdoor celebrations of the Blessed Mother, brings together the Catholic faithful from the 55 different cultural communities of the Southland along with representatives from several prominent national lay Catholic service organizations, including the Knights and Dames of Malta, Knights of St. Lazarus, Knights of Columbus, Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver and Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
Members of the Queen of Angels Foundation and other lay Catholic orders and participants will pay tribute in full regalia to Our Lady of the Angels in their first annual European-style procession, with a processional crucifix, a beautiful statue of Our Lady in a processional carriage, flowers, banners, flags, color guards, bagpipers, and more.
The 2011 Marian Procession revives a tradition of public Marian processions in Los Angeles to celebrate the founding and dedication of Los Angeles to Mary, Queen of Angels that has been dormant for nearly 150 years.
Mark Albert, event organizer and chairman of the Queen of Angels Foundation comments: "This 20112 Marian Procession, in the grand European style of public outdoor celebration to honor The Blessed Mother, revives a tradition here in Los Angeles since the founding of Los Angeles in 1781. It has a 5-fold purpose: First, it will unite Catholics of the Southland with the practice of the church in every age and country; secondly, it will serve as an act of faith and fidelity to the wishes of the current and recent popes; third, it will serve as an affirmation of the glorious local Catholic heritage of the Southland; fourth, it will bring together in unity and diversity all of the varied backgrounds and nationalities of the Archdiocese; fifth, it will mark our willingness to dedicate ourselves to the New Evangelization of our native places."
The Queen of Angels Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, nonprofit religious corporation founded in 2010 and dedicated to fostering devotion to Our Lady of the Angels as the Patroness and Protectoress of the City, County and Archdiocese that bear her name. The City of Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, in honor of the Blessed Virgin, Queen of Angels (El Pueblo de Nuestra Seńora la Reina de Los Ángeles). For approximately the first 100 years of the City's history, citizens marked Los Angeles' founding through processions and parades in honor of Our Lady of the Angels calling for God's blessings and protection for our civic and religious leaders and inhabitants. By re-inaugurating this civic birthday celebration and ancient religious observance, the Queen of Angels Foundation hopes to honor the Southland's history and heritage, celebrate the City's accomplishments and diversity, and help bring its multicultural community together to face common challenges with dignity, faith, hope and love.
Queen of Angeles foundation board members include: Mark Anchor Albert, Chairman; Nancy L. Iredale, Director, VP of Archdiocesan Relations; Thomas J. Condon, Director, VP of Archdiocesan Relations; William Shaw, Director and General Counsel; Ronald Katsky, Director and Corporate Secretary; Michael Maddigan, Director and Treasurer; Harry Tarnoff, Director and VP of Ecumenical Affairs; Charles Coulombe, Director, VP of Website Content; Michael McCauley, Director; Arthur "Tri" Fritz, Director; Jonathan Atzen, Director; Donald Keegan, Director; Ana Albert, Operations; Ingrid de Llamas, Executive Director. Councilman Thomas LaBonge is a member of the advisory board, as are several local clergy members, including Fr. Wilfred Raymond, President of Family Theater Productions.
