April 26th, 2012 Catholic Online (www.catholic.org) After falling from voters' favor thanks to a withering campaign by Romney, Gingrich has finally decided to call it quits. The former speaker of the House has confirmed that he will officially suspend his campaign on Tuesday. WASHINGTON DC (Catholic Online) - It is also predicted that Gingrich will endorse Romney. Gingrich's departure will make the Republican race essentially a two-man show with Ron Paul pledging to remain in the race until the Florida convention. Despite Paul's persistence, Romney will be the Republican nominee. Gingrich made his decision after losing to Romney across the board in five primaries that took place on Tuesday. Despite losing to Romney, Gingrich is signaling that he will support Romney and that he hopes his supporters will join him. During a campaign stop in North Carolina, Gingrich admitted "I do think it's pretty clear that Gov. Romney is ultimately going to be the nominee. And we're going to do everything we can make sure that he is in fact effective, and that we as a team are effective both in winning this Fall and then, frankly, in governing." Gingrich has subsequently added, "You have to at some point be honest about what's happening in the real world as opposed to what you would like to have happen. I think obviously that I would be a better candidate. But the objective fact is the voters didn't think that." Although he is suspending his campaign, Gingrich still plans to attend 23 events he has scheduled in North Carolina. "We're going to stay very, very active. I am committed to defeating Obama." Gingrich will continue to receive Secret Service protection. He is also hoping to accumulate funds to bail out his campaign, which is said to be running in the red. © 2012, Distributed by NEWS CONSORTIUM.
