Obama prepared to go after guns, Biden on mission to rally support

NRA warns Biden of political consequences.

President Obama is bent on "gun control" and he is willing to take weapons away from American citizens, by executive action if need be. That's was understanding as he sent Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday with a mission to "take thousands of people out of harm's way."

At the heart of Obama's effort is his belief that the Constitution is a living document.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Ironically, taking thousands of people out of harm's way could require more men with more guns to do it.

As mourning for the child victims of Sandy Hook ends for the nation, the political harvest begins. As so often happens in the wake of great tragedy, politicians take advantage of national emotion and hysteria to slam through new laws and rules that help inch us towards a brave new world. This time, the brave new world is one consistent with Obama's vision and it does not necessarily include you owning a firearm.

So, in a supposedly free nation where pizza arrives at your home faster than the police, President Obama has convened a "task force" with the aim of closing "loopholes" in national gun laws. Those closures mean outlawing assault rifles, limiting magazine capacity, and ensuring background checks for all gun owners.

In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo may pass a law to repeat background checks for current gun owners to make sure they are still permitted to possess a firearm. It is likely that if someone now fails the check, they will be required to turn it over to police, although it is unknown how this would happen. Success in New York could mean adoption across the nation.

Biden had this to say about his mission, invoking the Sandy Hook massacre to get others on board his agenda, "Every once in a while, there's something that awakens the conscience of the country, and that tragic event did it in a way like nothing I've seen in my career."

"The president and I are determined to take action. We can affect the well being of millions of Americans and take thousands of people out of harm's way if we act responsibly."

Despite Obama's insistence, he does acknowledge that he needs public support to enact any successful measures. Although he is fond of executive orders, his options are limited, checked by the need to defer to Congress on new laws.

The public, although understandably shocked by the violence at Sandy Hook, is understandably wary of sudden new measures enacted in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy.

Today, Biden meets with representatives from the NRA, who are expected to temper some of his and Obama's enthusiasm for "gun control." The NRA is a powerful lobby, which has thousands of members and millions more sympathizers.

It is hoped that Obama realizes that he should not move so fast, and not in the direction he has previously suggested, although the chances of that are slim.

I actually agree with Obama and Biden on gun control but it is evident that laws are made to be broken,so it is like trying to stop pornography,it has been allowed to become a politically huge economically lucrative snowball that no law or set of in acted law can change. Quite simply regulation has one to many looking the other way so the problem will always exist. Money lots of money, guns, pornography, abortions it is a living for many that helps to pay all the taxes first and foremost than maybe a few bills. Madness, murder, corruption and war it is all a living for many and the way to justify ones vocation,in a world blind to the ways of a God who became incarnate in the form of Jesus Christ. "Thou shalt love The Lord your God with all your heart, soul mind and strength.and your neighbor as yourself". The GoldenRule? Yes! The rule of our times? No! Sad? Yes!

    Herve,

How about enforcing the gun laws we already have, and stop the Government from arming the Mexican cartels for a start? If our Government really wanted to save lives, why not stop abortion and euthanasia?

How can passing new restrictions on law abiding citizens change people who already have shown that they will not follow any law? That would only make our society more prone to being victimized by criminals. It is a documented fact. Just look at Obama's Chicago for concrete proof.

If guns cause criminal activities, then forks make people fat, and your car will surely make your neighbors drive drunk.

Have to agree with you Stephany. There are devastating tragedies happening every single day, try roughly three THOUSAND abortions just in the US, and this alone has prompted a sort of response that threatens to suspend our liberties and freedoms (freedoms that by the way I as an American Soldier fight for and have seen friends die for). Any attempt by our executive branch to circumvent the constitution should result in immediate impeachment. And @Herve, the tone of the author is that of an impartial reporter... the way "news" should be.

Biden is quoted to say in this article, "The president and I are determined to take action. We can affect the well being of millions of Americans and take thousands of people out of harm's way if we act responsibly."

    'If we act responsibly'???
    They NEVER act responsibly.

    God Bless,

Herve, are you speaking of the innocent unborn babies killed by abortion in this country, of which Obama is a promoter???? The Catholic Church stands against this devastating tragedy. Where do you stand on this?

@Herve...a still greater tragedy would occur should the American People relinquish their Constitutional Protections because they were whipped up into a frenzy by an overzealous executive branch of the government, one that has far reaching tentacles with a tight grasp on public broadcasting. A far greater tragedy would be one which ignores all the blood shed by young soldiers reaching back two centuries to protect our Constitution. They also were someone 's child! And why, of all people, did Biden reach out to Bloomberg for advice? A man famous for outlawing the supersized softdrink when in NY there have been 1300 homocides in the last year! That alone tells me they are not at all serious about a solution. Their only interest is in circumnavigating the Constitution. Anyone who has seriously investigated Obama's background knows that he studied under men who advocated precisely that. If he does not uphold the Constitution which he swears to protect, he should be impeached on grounds of treason!

Hey Mr. Obama!!! "The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the peiople, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government---lest it come to dominate our lives and interests." Patrick Henry. Any questions????

I'd like to know what the Catholic church suggests should be done in the wake of one of the most devastating tragedies in recent American history. According to the tone of the author, absolutely nothing.
