As concerned for the common good we need to consider where candidates stand on marriage and vote accordingly.

With the prospect of a second term looming for President Obama we all need to wake up. This administration has failed to hear the cry of the poor in the womb. They are the most Anti-Life Administration in US History. They have failed to protect the First Freedom of Religious Freedom. If given four more years, they will dismantle marriage and the family and society founded upon it. The truth about marriage is not simply a "religious" construct. The Natural Law reveals - and the cross cultural history of civilization affirms - that marriage is between a man and a woman, open to children and intended for life.

WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) - On Sunday, May 6, 2012 the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden appeared on Meet the Press. Here is an excerpt from his interview: "I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual - men and women marrying - are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly, I don't see much of a distinction beyond that."

The political pundits began to parse his words. Obama surrogates like Axelrod feigned that they were not spoken on behalf of the Administration. The President orchestrated a strategy to once again make the claim that he was "troubled" by the issue and "still evolving". It was reminiscent of the fa�ade he offered when he ran for office concerning the fundamental Human Right to Life. Remember his words when he refused to affirm that life begins at conception when he was interviewed by Pastor Rick Warren. He said the matter was "above his pay grade."

Almost weekly there is an assault on marriage from this administration. On Monday, high profile Education Secretary Arne Duncan, declared his opposition to marriage as only between one man and one woman. He was asked on MSNBC 's Morning Joe whether he thought that homosexuals should be allowed to marry and said "yes I do". The position of this administration is clear and triangulation does not change a thing. The administration will neither enforce nor defend federal law, the Defense of Marriage Act.

The efforts of an activist wing of the homosexual community, a homosexual equivalency movement, have reframed the debate and are engaged in a Cultural Revolution intent on changing the legal definition of marriage and restructuring western culture accordingly. They have been joined by eager collaborators in the Judiciary and elected officials who believe they are some kind of new "liberators" when they are injuring the common good.

These leaders insist that homosexual sexual practices are morally equivalent to the sexual expression of marital love between a man and a woman. They further insist that the State make homosexual relationships legally equivalent to marriage. They are dedicated to building a society where the positive law of the Nation forces us all to call to be a marriage what can never be a marriage - or face the police power of the State.

The truth about marriage is not simply a "religious" construct. The Natural Law reveals - and the cross cultural history of civilization affirms - that marriage is between a man and a woman, open to children and intended for life. Marriage is the foundation for the family which is the privileged place for the formation of virtue and character in children, our future citizens. The family is the first society, first economy, first school, first civilizing and mediating institution and first government.

In his apostolic exhortation on the Eucharist, the Sacrament of Charity, Pope Benedict summarized the duty of the Catholic faithful when confronted with this assault on authentic marriage: "Marriage and the family are institutions that must be promoted and defended from every possible misrepresentation of their true nature, since whatever is injurious to them is injurious to society itself." That means you and me. We must defend marriage and the family!

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Catholic Church wrote these words in 2003, "The Church's teaching on marriage and on the complementarity of the sexes reiterates a truth that is evident to right reason and recognized as such by all the major cultures of the world. Marriage is not just any relationship between human beings. It was established by the Creator with its own nature, essential properties and purpose."

"No ideology can erase from the human spirit the certainty that marriage exists solely between a man and a woman, who by mutual personal gift, proper and exclusive to themselves, tend toward the communion of their persons. In this way, they mutually perfect each other, in order to cooperate with God in the procreation and upbringing of new human lives."

The loaded language of the homosexual equivalency movement is used by the main stream media. The verbal engineers of the Cultural Revolution have persuaded them to use their Orwellian newspeak. It was a subtle and strategic effort. First came the distinction between so called "traditional' Marriage and all other "marriages".

I warned many with whom I co-labor to defend true marriage not to use the term "traditional" as an adjective. There were a number of reasons I opined about the dangers of this propaganda ploy. To EDJU and David- you're ignorant of history. Homosexuals are blindly supporting and bringing in their own future executioners. The legal genocide against them won't be long if you succeed in bringing them in. No, they are not the people who support marriage between one man and one woman, nor are they the ones who defend the right to life from conception to natural death nor are they misinformed minorities and their leaders. Your executioners are the very ones who have promised you power if you vote for them. Go read about the people who initially brought in Hitler, Lenin/Stalin. Read about the "reward "given to their early and aggressive supporters. It is sad, but some people are bent on their own destruction. And David, your lame ploy to pit the Catholic laity against the Bishops is nonsense. The Bishops and the true Catholic laity are entering into deeper and deeper Solidarity. We watched Solidarity bring down atheistic communism in Europe and the Soviet Union without a shot being fired. Perhaps that peaceful outcome has to wait until those who support the violence of abortion and homosexuality have run their own self created course of self destruction by the very gov't they put into place by their vote. The silence of the Bishop of Wilmington is inexcusable. Continuing to allow Vice President Biden the sacraments just astounds me. We look to him and our other Shepherds to lead the opposition to this assault on our sensibilities and our religion. He has failed us and so have the other passive bishops. His pastoral letter regarding the HHS Mandate was word-for-word the exact same letter sent out by our Cardinal. Fast and pray, is that all we should do?

It would do the faithful a world of good and breath a little life into many sleeping Catholics who have become immune to the truth of the faith if they could actually hear the Shepherd in Charge of the soul of Joe Biden publicly respond to this man and his obvious capitulation to the culture of death and deception. The silence is killing us. Truth unspoken is truth unknown.

The church (which means its members) must be vigilant in protecting the family and the sacrament of marriage. If gays want "rights" to play house, then they can and already do have them: you can put anyone in your will, make them power of attorney, and in many instances add them to the newly created self + one health care plans. More than one can go into debt and buy a house together. They can shop. They are not permitted to be discriminated upon in housing or workplace. So, why highjack marriage? It has been a consistent ploy to get children!! They can not feel whole, because of a chosen lifestyle, and they mistakenly believe that a child wil fulfill them. I am sure that there are people who are very loving parents who have chosen the path of Sodomites. You must understand that your acts have consequences and each child deserves to have a mother and a father; one of each sex. Children do not need gender confusion added to the mix. If anyone truly cared, they would not be pushing their agenda on everyone else. Morally and emotionally corrupting our youth does not elevate our society. If you want true liberty, follow God's path. God is true, genuine, all love, and never changing. His plan was for one man and one woman to join together and become one. The fruit of true love is the child God blesses them with. We have allowed too many assaults on the family which in turn devalues each individual for the cord is strongest when there are three.

Abortion! People are aware now! If there is any reason for it possibly being done less now as Marcus claims,it is because many never realized that it was really always legal to have a full term abortion for any reason ever since Roe vs Wade. The idea of abortion has come under scrutiny. People are slowly rejecting the idea. Obama has nothing to do with it . He loves the idea and promotes it.The so called 24 weeks limit due to it being viable that prevented abortion was a lie.. No one fully realized that at full term it was really legal to put forceps through the back of the skull and into the brain of the healthy fetus to suction the brains out before the head emerged at delivery to legally abort it. Medical people did not know this. This sort of a brutal attack on the soon to be born,has always been legally sanctioned murder under the disguise of it being essential for a woman's health. The murderer gets the death penalty because they chose to murder someone,a woman and her playmate don't because it is a woman's right to choose to terminate or rather kill a human fetus,simply because they do to want the thing. Chastity and the idea of family,traditional marriages between a man and a woman for a life time together and planning their families,is the way to limit unnecessary pregnancies. Sexual healthy individuals in mind and body are an impossibility in a world where sex is just tag team wrestling with anyone at all who cares. Love and sex are now worlds apart as sex is as romantic as emptying ones urinary bladder. That is all sex is without a man and a woman committing to each other in a Holy or a Civil Marriage. These are basic human laws and the rules for having a healthy life that are in question here it has nothing to do with associating oneself with some religious entity. Biden,a cafeteria Catholic,is the executioner of the Catholic Church and all that it teaches and values. How convenient for Obama as he begins his campaign for his 2nd term. He has a catholic moron to do all of his dirty work for him as he can absolve himself of his sins, the sin of Obama's total approval of abortion and so called alternate lifestyles he will make legal no matter what.

Very good article, deacon Keith. But the sword of excommunication is more mighty than the pen. This Sunday, Joe Biden, like every other Sunday for the past three decades, will receive Holy Communion from a Catholic priest in Delaware. By his utter silence, the bishop of Wilmington, DE, is telling us that VP Biden is a Catholic in good standing. Oh, yes, and by the way, Nancy Pelosi will also receive Holy Communion this coming Sunday. She never misses Sunday Mass either when in D.C., in CA, or in any part of the world. Cardinal Wuerl keeps telling us that these politicians are not the members of his flock, but only work in Washington. And when a priest does stand up to a public Lesbian and Buddhist in the D.C. diocese and denies Holy Communion, that priest is stripped of his faculties. Welcome to the modern Church...and to the power of the Homosexual Lobby and Lavender Mafia.

@David E. - hmmm...another ignorant Catholic I assume, according to Catholic Dogma "By reason of her purpose and the means she uses to effect it the Church is a supernatural spiritual society", what you just describe is protestantism for the most part; and unless you been living under a rock some protestant churches are breaking apart for the very reason you decribe...a church of the people and not so much divinely inspired.
Yes excommmunicate! get rid of the modernists/liberal catholics if they will not repent their sins of abortion, homosexuality, etc...as our Lord says in Luke 18:8

"But yet the Son of man, when he cometh, shall he find, think you, faith on earth?"

The concept of anything any politician does is irrevocable speaks volumes about the state of our politics and leadership. It also speaks volumes about what we blindly accept from DC. There is absolutely nothing that cannot be undone with enough will. But so long as we treat politics like the superbowl, we will get no where. I have my team and you have your team and I could care less what my team does so long as your team isn't elected or thrown out, depending on which team is in "power." But at the end of the day, debt, deficits, bad law and abortion remain. If we don't wake up to this simple fact we'll just keep spiraling down the toilet. We may change leadership, but I think they are all taking us to the same place.
