Guest Opinion: Rand Paul for President! People's Hero
What Will Republican Leaders Do?
'If Obama can go from a Senate victory in 2004 to the Presidency in 2008, why can't Rand Paul pull off a similar miracle? The first goal is victory in November; the second is the White House. Simply put, he (Rand Paul) will not betray his pro-life principles and his ethical core for the sake of the Republican Party. That makes him a hero to us "common folk;" it makes him a danger to the elite'. (Randall Terry)

WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) - Dr. Rand Paul's primary victory over the GOP machine pick (and Kentucky Secretary of State) Trey Grayson is a stunning victory for grass roots Americans, a tremendous victory for the pro-life movement, and a stunning blow to the Republican establishment.
Dr. Paul's triumph is a political nightmare for the GOP. They want the momentum, money, manpower and votes of the "Tea Party" activists and other angry voters. But they tremble over candidates like Dr. Paul who are actually principled when it comes to fiscal liberty, ending socialism in America, defending Christian Marriage, and outlawing all child killing by abortion from conception until birth.
This is a huge quagmire for Republican Leaders. If old-line party leaders - many of whom are trying to co-opt the "Tea Party" for run of the mill GOP candidates, (whether pro-life, pro-family, or not) - speak against Paul, they will face an angry mob, and their influence in the Tea Party movement will be over.
If the national party "distances itself" from Paul, they will further enrage a base that is quickly becoming unruly and uncontrollable by party leaders. It will cause the base to withhold funds and man-hours from the party apparatus.
If the GOP embraces Dr. Paul, his economic policies and true commitment to the pro-life cause and economic liberty will show that the GOP is incoherent in principle and policy. Far too often, its candidates and office holders are big government socialists, tacit supporters of child-killing (who when needed use "pro-life" words to seduce pro-life voters), heralds for corporate interests and foreign regimes, etc.
It is my conviction that the GOP would be delighted to have Scott Brown of Massachusetts as their prototype for a political superhero. He is pro-abortion, a man without a clear ethical compass, and he will put Party ahead of Principle when told to by party bosses.
They will even tolerate someone like Arizona Senator Jon Kyl, who talked a lot of political smack - saying he would filibuster a Obama Supreme Court nominee if the person is too ideological - who then tucked his tail and ran from the actual battle now that ultra left winger Elana Kagan is the nominee. His words seduce; his actions produce.nothing.
Rand Paul, by contrast, is the real article; a man guided by principle, not party; a man loyal to ethics, not party bosses. His pro-life position is flawless, and he will act on it courageously under fire, not run from it when it is politically expedient.
Simply put, he will not betray his pro-life principles and his ethical core for the sake of the Republican Party. That makes him a hero to us "common folk;" it makes him a danger to the elite.
Scott Brown's victory in Massachusetts was a vote against Washington DC Democrats; Dr. Paul's victory was a vote against the GOP establishment.
Herein lies the crisis brewing for GOP leaders: If Dr. Paul becomes the poster boy of Republican foot soldiers, those who rule the ivory tower will look as foolish as the naked emperor. They will be seen as phonies craving power, using empty rhetoric to reach their goals, especially "pro-life, pro-family" rhetoric.
What will the GOP do? Something Machiavellian, I proffer. And it will be ugly.
But their teeth gnashing and secret machinations will not matter. Kentucky is the perfect state for Paul's victory in November. Obama is very unpopular; pro-life and "tea party" activists are energized, and willing to sacrifice their time and money; and the Democrats have neither the message or the man to stop the Paul Juggernaut.
Paul will win in November, with or without the GOP machinery and its blessing.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if he inherited the Ronald Reagan populist mantle, and went on to win the White House? Wouldn't it be great if a populist pro-lifer was our President? Let us remember that Ronald Reagan was a man of principle who was strongly disliked by the GOP establishment...yet he became the most popular president of the last 60 years.
Run, Rand, run!

Next we will have the KKK killing blacks and catholics as history in America was in the Bible belt. This guys views are unbelievable. Just because a person says they are pro life dosn't mean anything. Reagan and Bush's said the same thing and did nothing while the rich got richer and the poor poorer. The right will say anything for power. Reagan as the governer in California in 1967 passed the first abortion bill that killed 200,000 babies. Richard Nixon and a Supreme Court of GOP appointee's made it law. Nixon made the comment at that time " abortion is especially good when blacks marry whites".
Another wolf in sheep's clothing! Rand Paul may be pro-life but he does not follow many Catholic views, I would never vote for him due his views on race. As Catholics we are not supposed to be partisian and push one party over another, why can many on this site not figure that out. Republican does not equal Catholic, same goes for Democrat. Vote for candidates, not parties. I think there are some very good, pro-Catholic Democrats and Republicans out there and I will support them all. It's sad when the comments on this start to resemble the blogs on Fox News.
A racist and should be in prison for his views. His mentality of the south is repulsive. Personally he makes me sick. Reminds me of my military days in Kenucky.
Woah Mark... I'm sorry but the Republican Party in essence certainly does not encourage any of what you mentioned. Maybe some of its members do, but it isn't at all what the Party is about, despite the fact that its what Christian Liberals like to pretend.
This guy is a nut just like his dad and is proving to be a dumb candidate by his lack of clarity in interviews- he is looking more and more like a fool everyday he opens his mouth...he will never get a presidential nod. He thinks an establishment should have a constitutional right to deny someone based on their race! He is a libertarian, not a conservative.....Wake up! Get real everyone... Chris Christie in New Jersey is the real deal....and he's smart, not playing political idiocy like Rand Paul.
RAND IS THE REAL DEAL,NO MORE COUNCIL OF FOREIGN RELATIONS DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS.........................NO NEW WORLD ORDER...
we'll see.
Mark M; My hat's off to you. A lot of folks, myself included, would have gotten just a bit testy when criticized. You have not. Your reply to the criticism was genteel and even handed. I had you going off in the "liberal" direction but if I hear you right you are probably just as fed up with the one-party, big government system that pitches between the Democrats and Republicans (as if offering us a real choice) but inevitably serves only the politicians and their "power" masters rather than the people. For myself I'd just like to see us get back to the "limited government" the founders intended. No manifest destiny, no warfare state, no welfare state.
Greg makes an excellent point. In the last Primary Election, the Republican pro-life candidates Huckabee and Ron Paul shared the votes, which if combined, would have resulted in a McCain loss. Had Huckabee and Paul united somehow, perhaps one of them would have beat Obama in the General Election.
The worst possible outcome for the Republican party would be for our Christian conservatives brothers and sisters to divide our vote between "Tea Party" candidates and Republican party candidates, thus losing our opportunity to regain a majority position in both the Senate and House. Let's work together to consolidate our efforts to be one united voice to select and support those candidates that will reinstate our Founding Fathers values and principles.
