Health Care Alert: Maddow is Mad, NOW is Nasty. Bishops say No! Stupak Stands Strong.

'From Rachel Maddow to the Daily Kos...Does it bother me? Sure. Does it change my position? No.'

Congressman Bart Stupak is a defender of life who has become the nemesis of those who want to have tax dollars fund abortion.

Congressman Bart Stupak is a defender of life who has become the nemesis of those who want to have tax dollars fund abortion.

WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) – She is the livewire host on MSNBC, a network which prides itself as being "the place for politics." Of course, it depends on your politics. Trained by Keith Olbermann, she is a little less annoying than her mentor. She does it with a smile. She is arrogant …and she is an activist. And, when she gets mad…. she gets even.

That was eminently clear on March 10, 2010 when she decided to jettison any claims at being a reporter and simply verbally attack Congressman Bart Stupak. The piece was entitled "Bart Stupak´s 15 Minutes of Fame." It was among the worst examples of a vicious, agenda based diatribe as I have ever seen. Rachel, as well as MSNBC, ought to be ashamed of this broadcast.

Ms. Maddow simply does not like the fact that Bart Stupak is a defender of the fundamental human Right to Life. She is mad that he will not back down from his position rooted in the objective truth, revealed by the Natural Law and confirmed by medical science that the child in the womb is one of us. She is a supporter of what is being called the "Right to Choose", which simply means the protection with the Police Power of the State of those who engage in the killing of children in the womb.

Bart Stupak insists properly that abortion is not health care, it can never be. It is killing a child in the womb. He refuses to support any Health Care Reform package which provides funding for the intentional killing of children in that first home of the whole human race. For that, Bart Stupak should be applauded, not pilloried with thekind of verbal venom which poured out of Rachel Maddow´s smiling mouth.

I know that many of our readers oppose many other aspects of this legislation, not the least of which is the federalizing of health care delivery services, as violating the principle of subsidiarity. I share some of those concerns. The Catechismof the Catholic Church summarizes the principle, "In accordance with the principle of subsidiarity, neither the state nor any larger society should substitute itself for the initiative and responsibility of individuals and intermediary bodies."  However, during this 11th hour, we must remember that there is a hierarchy of truths and values concerning this legislation as there as many other legislative and policy arenas. The protection of innocent life is most important.

In a recent interview, Richard Doerflinger, speaking on behalf of the US Catholic Bishop´s conference said, "The Senate may have to figure out whether it wants its abortion position or if it wants a health care bill…That´s the difficult decision (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi made, and she chose a health care bill. The Senate decided it could have its cake and eat it, too. That is no longer true. Something´s going to have to give...We have a simple position…Everybody gets covered. Nobody gets deliberately killed."

Using hardball legislative techniques which may be unconstitutional (see, ´Obamacare, Unleashing a Constitutional Crisis´ by Wesley J. Smith) this fatally flawed legislation may pass this week unless there is a huge outcry. And, without a lifesaving amendment, it will fund the killing of our youngest neighbors under the ruse of "Health Care."

For his unflinching defense of the Right to Life, Congressman Bart Stupak should be praised. Stupak shares the same position that Richard Doerflinger also stated so succinctly this past week: "If the bill attacks life itself, in our view, it's not health care reform." Stupak told Associated Press Reporter John Flesher this past week "I believe in the sanctity of life…. Because it may not be convenient, do you take a life? That's not the standard of a moral society."

Stupak is a Democrat who supports some kind of Health Care Reform Legislation. However, he knows that abortion is not health care. That is the most pressing matter we face in this 11th hour. He courageously refuses to compromise because innocent human life is at stake. He has not bought the sophism of Speaker Pelosi on the matter, no matter how much subterfuge and arm twisting she engages in. He is standing strong.

However, Rachel Maddow has decided she will make it her personal mission to destroy his reputation. She is hell bent on getting this current legislation through-  without the necessary life saving amendment. How else can one explain her snide, sarcastic and infantile verbal assault on the Congressman? In this alleged "Investigation" aired on MSNBC she threw a steady barrage of insults at him like an angry child. She interspersed her tantrum with unfounded allegations and innuendoes intended to impugn this man´s motives.

She asserted several times that he is "…trying to make himself famous" and that he is "…trying to hijack health care." Of course, that fails to take into account that he actually supports health care reform. He just refuses to compromise on funding the killing of children in the womb ...

The Catholic bishops did their level best to elect Obama via their contributions to ACORN and the like. Now they make a big show of opposing his pro-death agenda. They deserve no credit.

I saw Maddow's rant and thought it was over-the-top insulting and mean-spirited. Certainly not journalism. But that's what MSNBC delivers these days -- unprofessional, "assassination" pieces. God bless Bart Stupak and strengthen him to remain firm and steadfast in his resolve to protect life. He's our last hope to stop this terrible legislation. Lord, have mercy on us.

People that believe in abortion should be thankful and give thanks to God that they were given a chance to be born and that when they were in their mothers womb they were not slaughtered.

Let me rattle the boat here a bit. I'm a Catholic and love our faith tracing back to the Apostles. But Stupak's conscience seems to waver considerably and seems comfortable with settling on certain principles while ignoring others. Case in point: his residence at a C Street apt with direct and undeniable claims to "The Family". His conscience would be more credible if he were able to explain to whom he paid his rent, who subsidized the rent while there, did he declare it as required by federal law, did he file it as income pursuant to IRS statutes? And for the record what exactly was his role in "The Family"? His conscience would be more credible if he answered those questions as well--but then again perhaps the IRS and other appropriate agencies will bring those discrepancies to light. I am a Republican.....I never voted for Bush and I supported and still support President Obama. But let's get Bart to come clean on a lot of issues which might bother us if they were exposed in sunlight.

Hey keep in mind fellow Pro-Life Catholics I do not support Nancy Pelosi right to The Kennedy's in politics who toute their Catholicism but are Pro-Choice. I will pray for them but I will not agree with them. Peacefully protesting their stance I am ashamed of them and they shame the church in their support of abortion rights. If I were many of you I would write your Representatives and tell them what you think in a respectful manner. Peace.

Rachel is certainly very nasty. And I have to wonder if her own personal life has something to do with her strident support of abortion. After all, can we expect her to have any maternal feelings of protection for children, particularly children in the womb? After all, we know she's never having any.

Catholic Hospitals, Catholic charities and the Catholic Church. How dare we, as Catholics, look to a government as the solution to the commandment Jesus gave us all, to Love one another. There is no place for governments in health care. If that was the way to do things Jesus would have gone to Rome to convert Caesar. God Pray for your Church that they seek not the compassion of government, may we seek the compassion of your son Jesus! Pray for those, as Jesus, prayed for Judas!

The bishops should stand against the whole Obamacare scam and not only the abortion part of the scam. The bishops should understand that no amendment can transform a criminal scam like Obamacare into an honest bill. Any "amendments" will be just tricks, like the Stupak amendment, to force us to swallow the scam. The Stupak amendment was just another trick used by Obama and his Comrades to pass the Obamacare SCAM through the House. Tricked by the amendment, some Catholics (not all) actually believed the lies of Obama and his accomplices regarding abortion coverage! Tricked by the amendment, they failed to look at the evil behind the whole Obamacare scam. Informed Americans, however, understand that, if Obama gets his way, Obamacare will FORCE us to pay for abortions, infanticide (late-term abortion) and probably euthanasia, no matter what Obama and his comrades say to force us to swallow the scam. Lies do not change Obama's pro-abortion and pro-infanticide (late-term abortion) stand, nor the aberrant stands of Obama's Health Care Czar Ezekiel Emanuel and Science Czar John Holdren. Lies do not change the FACT that we are broke and Obamacare will further destroy our economy, our future and the future of our children and grandchildren. Lies do not change the FACT that Obamacare is another scam to enslave us. We expect our Church and our representatives to defend us from the whole Obamacare scam, not just the abortion part of the scam.

There are pieces of the bill itself that may be unconstitutional. Can the government dictate that people buy health insurance? If so, can the government ban salt? Force people to remove the skin from the chicken before grilling (obesity being a 'national epidemic' and all)? These questions may seem to be silly exercises of thought, but they are valid questions. Can the government dictate an individuals resources in order to serve the public good? How far does this dictation extend? What happens if the public refuses en masse to cooperate with the new system?

"Unfounded allegations and innuendos..." That's very much what this article does. I watched the Maddow report and everything she said was backed up with evidence. That's more than I can say about this article.

We need universal healthcare for everyone. The only Catholic group that 'gets it' is the Catholic Health Association. The Catholic Health Association-our Catholic hospitals, the people who KNOW healthcare, want healthcare to pass and they know that federal funds will not be used for abortion in this bill. They have sent a letter to congress asking that this bill be passed. I don't understand why "Catholics" dont' feel this is a life issue. I keep hearing about subsidarity-taking care of people at the local level..mainly through charity. Well, that isn't working. We have hard working (not lazy) people who work where their employers don't provide access to health insurance. They die because they can't afford the dr's visit for screenings and the medicines for heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer etc that prevent an early death. A Harvard Study says as many as 45,000 people die every year because they lack healthcare. I know when their health becomes so bad that they are dying they can go the ER and they won't be turned away. This isn't healthcare!!! Most of the Catholic Church now cares only about the fetus not this same baby after he/she is born. Why aren't we as Catholics protesting insurance companies who raise our premiums-in some cases recently at 39% (Anthem BlueCross BlueSheild), drop people for pre-existing reasons (acne as a teenager etc) after you've paid premiums for years. Where is the outrage over the insurance companies? I am a cradle Catholic and I am outraged and heartbroken with most of the Catholic reponse to the healthcare debate.

Rahel Madow and Chris Matthews' ratings COMBINED don't equal FOX at commensurate time of airing. No one watches them for obvious reasons.Claire just posted that the current and pending health care bill doesn't use federal funds for abortion; how can anyone be that ill informed. Good Grief.

  17. Rosemary
    March 15th, 2010 3:56 am

Either "Claire" is a misinformed "cradle Catholic", or she's a troll. At least she got TO the cradle! These little babies, (not "fetuses", salt-burned and torn to bits, never got to be born. By the way, there ARE no "cradle Catholics". We are Catholic and Christian by virtue of the grace given in baptism. And we DO care about the babies after they are born; through Crisis Pregnancy Centers and many other ways. We can have health care WITHOUT abortion funded by tax dollars. The Catholic Health Association should be ashamed of its letter. Mr. Stupak is on the side of the angels.

Let's be clear. It is NOT Bart Stupak holding up this legislation. The administration REFUSES to put two lines into the Senate bill that would do nothing but continue current law, which is what President Obama publicly stated he wanted to do. The leadership who refuses to put those two little lines in are the ones holding up the bill. To say it is Bart Stupak is Orwellian language, and looks like many of the readers here have fallen for it.

Has anybody seen the proposed text? I have. Mind you, I'm not a lawyer, but I don't see federal funds for abortions in the proposed law. I just don't see it. Could one of the bishops or an expert in law who sees funderally funded abortions in the proposed law point it out in an article for publication in one of the major newspapers! If it's there, then it's worth the money (the newspapers will take the money) to set the facts & record straight! If it's there then the Church can sit there and do nothing!!

You have to feel sorry for her. She tries to reduce Bart Stupak to a Caricature - she reduces the Fetus and the Embryo to objects and ashes. In all of this, she only reduces herself. By allowing himself to be so reduced for the sake of the least of Jesus brothers and sisters, continued voluntary acceptance of reduction could earn Bart an everlasting crown. I'm happy for Bart, sad for poor Rachel.

It's interesting to see how democrats will fight for the right to live for condemned terrorists and convicted criminals on death row, but will fight for the right to end the lives of unwanted babies, the elderly, and infirmed (hello, Terri Schiavo!). I know I'm overstating this but the difference between republicans and the few pro-life democrats and the democrat party as a whole is glaringly obvious.

I think the Catholic position is simple. Make the health care overhaul minus the abortion funding. Simple as that. People whining about Catholic church being non-catholic are missing the point. The church can't say kill the babies for the sake of good for those already born. The church wants the good of all humanity, unborn babies included. The church isn't saying that health care reforms aren't needed, just that it should be done correctly so that entire humanity will benefit.

As a Combat Veteran of the unnecessary Vietnam war, I agreed with Rachel Maqddow on electing Obama to end the two wars and especially the unnecessary Iraq war. I agree this nation needs to reform Health Care and take the massive profits away from caring for the sick and injured, but she is not a Catholic, and is blind to the fact that children are fully formed humans at conception because God has told us so. We should pray that God cure her of this blindness.

I'm not surprised that the "Catholic Health Association" endorses Obamacare. They stand to get billions in subsidies (and good paying positions with Caesar) if they look the other way on abortion and euthanasia. When there's money on the table, you can count on the faith being pushed to the side. All that Rep. Stupak is looking for is a deal like the "Louisiana Purchase." Once he gets one, look for Stupak to vote enthusiastically for Obamacare. Netherlands, here we come!

Amazing how the evil against our humanity is coming out of the speeches of some of the citizens of the country that glorys in the Defence of Freedom..... Well, the phrase "Stupark is un-American" for his stance for the human dignity reveals the venom of the opposition..where are they from? another planent? or are they offsprings of the aliens that landed in American soil? They are so unhuman, to go against the dignity that makes all of us a family. We pray for all that grace of Lent can open up their eyes and may the passion of Christ unveiled again their spiritual nakedness...Thanks to the Bishops of America and God bless you Bart Stupark and your family. Thanks for being an American Human Cheerio

As a Catholic Democrat I agree we need Health Care Reform in this country very badly, but death is not Health Care, and killing a baby in its mother's womb is murder pure and simple. Too many Americans have been allowed to die because we ignore the greed of MediCorp companys, and Big Pharmaceutical Giants, and the consequence that millions of our fellow citizens can not afford life because of these agents of greed. Making money off people's misery is almost as big an abomination as abortion, especially since, like abortion, it has already killed so many people.

"If you don't want one then don't have one. but don't tell me I can't have one!" Interesting that pro-abortion types like Madow, who portray themselves as champions of human rights, use exactly the same language and argument that slave owners did when they denounced abolitionist.
