Catholic League Calls for Defunding 'Safe Sex' Programs

The Obama administration mindlessly cut all funding for abstinence-only programs, citing the lack of scientific evidence for such models.

NEW YORK, NY (Catholic League) - In a new study published in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, abstinence-based sex education programs yielded results far superior to competing strategies. John B. Jemmott III, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, led the federally funded research.

This study, which focused on African American students from four public middle schools in the Northeast between the years 2001 and 2004, is being hailed by the scientific community for its methodological excellence.

Sociologist Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, looked at the many aspects of this landmark study:

"An honest look at the evidence yields several conclusions, one of which is that “safe sex” programs are a danger to American youth and need to be defunded by the Obama administration immediately.

"The student body was divided into four different groups: those who received an abstinence-only education; those who followed a “safe sex” curriculum; those who were exposed to a comprehensive program that included elements of both approaches; and those who were introduced to a “healthy living” curriculum, e.g., advice on eating and exercise.

"The worst results stemmed from those who followed the “safe sex” strategy: 52 percent started having sex.

The best results came from those who followed the abstinence-only approach: 33 percent of the students started having sex.

"Those in the blended program, and those in the “healthy living” one, yielded results of 42 and 47 percent, respectively. In other words, even those kids who were not given a sex education program at all did better than those in the “safe sex” group.

"The Obama administration mindlessly cut all funding for abstinence-only programs, citing the lack of scientific evidence for such models.

"Now that their beloved “here’s how to put a condom on a cucumber” approach to sex ed is a proven disaster, it’s time to cut “safe sex” programs and put all the money into abstinence-only ones.

It’s also time to fund voucher programs: black kids in Catholic schools succeed both in and out of the classroom."

    Sir,
I read in an American Magazine ( The Week April 10 2009) that American catholics are more liberal than the general population on homosexuality, divorce and pre-marital sex , despite the Catholic Church's official stance on those issues. The report says that 54 % catholics say homosexual relations are morally acceptable compared to 45 % of non-catholics; 71 %approve divorce compared with 66 % of non-catholics; 67 % say premarital is morally acceptable compared with 57 % of non-catholics if this is correct, it would mean that the Catholic teachings are not known to majority of catholics or they do not heed to the teachings of the Church. When we talk about the sex education, abstinence etc, we the parents should be firm believers in the teachings of the Church and we should pass on the religious culture and moral traditions to our children. If we Catholics are united no Obama can stamp on us and deny us the freedom to teach christian morals

Anyone with half a brain, which seems to leave out the Obama regime, knows that abstinence works better than so-called safe sex. No matter what precautions are taken, people can still get STD's. The only sure way of not getting them, girls not getting pregnant is abstinence. In any case, any type of sex education should be left up to parents not schools or the idiot government.

Hooray to those who are not afraid to speak up. My mother did, and her teaching were, don't have sex outside of marriage, God knows what you do! I am sorry folks, but I don't feel it is the responsibility of society to provide "safe sex" products to children. Who in there right mind feels this is ok?? Have we lost our minds??? Our job as adults is to teach our children right from wrong..... Why is sex outside of marriage ok now? Look what it has done to our world. Open your eyes people.
