Paul Schenck for Bishop Rhoades on Notre Dame Scandal

It is Bishop Rhoades’ hope and prayer that all the institutions that bear the name ‘Catholic’ will affirm the Church’s teachings, expose the culture of death and build up the Culture of Life.

Bishop Rhoades also supports those who exercise their freedom of conscience and speech to express their opposition to the university’s decision to have President Obama as commencement speaker and honoree. In fact, Bishop Rhoades has written to the president of the university to express his disagreement with the university’s action.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Catholic Online) – To anyone who has been in the Pro-Life movement for any length of time Paul Schenck is a hero. He has stood without compromise in the trenches of the fundamental human rights issue of our age, the struggle to defend the preeminent Right to Life. In fact, he put his life, his reputation and his very liberty on the line for life. He is an iconic figure in the Pro-Life movement. The image which adorned the cover of Life magazine of a younger Paul Schenck, still a Protestant minister at the time, standing up for life is a part of the pictorial history of our movement.

The US Supreme Court case which bears his name has protected the Free Speech rights of Pro-Life citizens for a long time - Schenck v. Pro-Choice Network of Western New York (1997). It was argued successfully by Pro- Life champion Jay Alan Sekulow. I had the privilege of serving along with Jay and helping to defend Paul in those days. It is an honor to say he has been a friend for decades. I am inspired by his courage to continue on in this struggle until we succeed. I also rejoice over his wonderful faith journey which led all the way home to his entry into full communion with the Catholic Church. I served as the Deacon at the Mass of reception into full communion when Fr Frank Pavone welcomed Paul home.

So, when I read the letter written on behalf of Bishop Rhoades by Paul C.B. Schenck, I admit I was not surprised. After all, Paul understands the importance of the struggle for the soul of Notre Dame. The Catholic Church is the bulwark of truth in an age of lies. In a culture properly characterized as a “Culture of Death” she is the Champion of a new “Culture of Life”. The invitation extended to President Obama to receive an honorary Law Degree from Our Lady’s University is a scandal. It has galvanized Pro-Life Catholics, other Christians and all people of good will and it will not go away. It is good to see Paul CB Schenck again on the front lines. We present his letter in our continued coverage of this important issue:

Subject: FW: Bishops statement re Notre Dame

Dear Christina,

Thank you for your note of concern which you recently sent to the Bishop’s office regarding the University of Notre Dame.

Maria Wood, secretary to Bishop Rhoades, referred your email to me. Bishop Rhoades has discussed this issue with me, as it pertains specifically to my office.

As is clear from Bishop Rhoades’ most recent commentary entitled "Disturbing advances for the culture of death", President Obama’s policies, and those of his administration, on abortion and embryonic stem cell research violate the moral law and Church teachings on the sanctity of human life and dignity of the person. Bishop Rhoades concurs with Bishop D'Arcy's statement and position on the matter. (Bishop D’Arcy is the bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, the diocese in which Notre Dame is located). Bishop Rhoades stands firmly with the US Catholic Bishops’ statement called “Catholics in Political Life” which unambiguously says –

“The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions”.

Bishop Rhoades also supports those who exercise their freedom of conscience and speech to express their opposition to the university’s decision to have President Obama as commencement speaker and honoree. In fact, Bishop Rhoades has written to the president of the university to express his disagreement with the university’s action.

It is disheartening and distressing when an institution that is regarded as Catholic, such as Notre Dame, fails to follow the guidelines set forth by the Bishops of the Catholic Church, especially in these vital moral matters. It is not political nor partisan to stand for the sanctity of human life and the dignity of the human person. President Obama clearly does not stand for or advance the cause of the defenseless unborn and their mothers and families. This is the tragic reality we must come to terms with as Catholics living in an increasingly secular environment. It is heartening on the other hand, to see how many Notre Dame Students, faculty and alumni have made their commitment to human life known and how many Catholics and others of good will have done the same.

It is Bishop Rhoades’ hope and prayer that all the institutions that bear the name “Catholic” will affirm the Church’s teachings, expose the culture of death and build up the Culture of Life. Thank you for your selfless commitment to the defense of innocent human life. Please be assured of our prayers.

On behalf of Bishop Rhoades and myself, I am

Sincerely,

Paul CB Schenck, MA (Theol.), LHD, Director Office of Respect Life Activities, Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg

I thank God we have people in this world like Paul Schenck and Bishop Rhoades and Bishop D'Arcy. I am a convert to the Catholic Church, but have been pro-life all my life. It has always been a mystery to me how Catholic politicians who are pro-choice can avoid being excommunicated. I consider the pro-choice stand of people in the public eyes to be the gravest of all sins. Naturally we are all guilty of sin, but the sins that influence millions must be among the very worst.

Bishop McManus preceded Bishop D'Arcy in the Fort Wayne/South Bend Diocese. Many years ago I attended the pro-life services of Bishop McManus at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne. After the services and as the people were leaving Church I knelt Praying for the unborn when suddenly I realized someone was in front of me. I had had my eyes closed while Praying. I opened my eyes and our Holy Mother Mary was facing me with her arms outstretched. She spoke only three words. Those words were "Save My Children!" I will never forget those words. As a person who had suffered from epilepsy back in 1957-58 time period I had always wanted to be a blood donor. I was finally accepted on Apriy 16, 1991 and started donating platelets via the pheresis process on Oct 31, 1991. I was totally removed from anti-seizure medication nearly seven years ago and have remained seizure free. Those words of our Holy Mother have helped me remain loyal to saving lives. I have now donated platelets on three hundred and sixty one occurrences in addition to thirteen times donating whole blood. On google do a search as follows: epilepsy +pheresis and you will see an article the Epileptic Foundation of America wrote.

As a pro-life blood donor I take special note of the others donating blood products. I am reasonably certain that most of us are pro-life and if it were not for the pro-life blood donors hospitals would not be able to perform transfusions. I would like to see gallop or someone do a poll to prove my theory. My thinking is that such a poll might wake up our politicians.

I understand how someone in the process of converting would be so diheartened. It seems that there was no problem with the vatican stepping up in January of 2009. Why not now? Why so silent? I am not angered, just in disbelief that this was allowed at a catholic institution. Obama has always been Pro choice. This is nothing new. Asking for common ground on something the church teaches is murder is irrational to me. I pray more people of the christian faith will understand that all life is sacred, large and small. I do not feel that anger is how we get through this, but with much prayer and trust in our father.

As someone who is in the process of converting to the Catholic faith, it disheartens me to see the blatant hypocrisy, both at Georgetown and now Notre Dame. I stand with all those outraged at the events occurring at both Universities. We cannot and will not stand for this.

Notre Dame is violating the Bishops guidelines for regarding the sanctity of human life. Obama is the antithesis of what a faithful Catholic is suppose to be or represent. I am outraged at how Notre Dame is blatantly going against and not promoting the moral teachings of the Catholic Church.I commend Paul Schenk for standing up and defending innocent unborn babies. To see additional comments and a video of me explaining my outrage at Notre Dames decision to have Obama as a commencement speaker and be given an honorary degree you can go here:

    Dear Catholic.org,

Your leadership in staying front on center on this issue is a sign of hope for us all who have been sickened by these events at Nore Dame.

Catholic organizations world wide are taking note of your leadership and learning we must speak up and say "enough is enough".

I just read that President Obama spoke today at Georgetown University! Where is the outrage?

Frankly, as a non-Catholic, when I hear the words "scandal" and "Catholic", I don't think about Notre Dame University. As as sympathetic, pro-Life, non-Roman catholic, I must say that this tempest makes the Church look silly. Perhaps there was bad judgement in extending the invitation, but there is worse judgement in making a such a stink about it.

Why do we have a chain of command in our church if they cannot exercise any authority over the priests of our parishes and universities etc. Just please somebody any authority tell Fr. Jenkins ND is a Catholic university and to recind the invitation.
