Opinion: Bishop Martino is Right, ‘This is Madness People’
Bishop Martino understands that he is a Moral teacher of the faithful. He is called by virtue of his consecration to the Office of Bishop to protect the faithful from errant teaching.
The Bishop stepped up to the microphone. He told those present: “No social issue has caused the death of 50 million people”, referring of course to the current evil of abortion on demand as it exists in the United States of America since the horrible judicial opinions in Roe and Doe. Then he spoke those four words, “This is Madness People.”
After listening to some of the speakers attempt to take the most recent letter of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops on “Faithful Citizenship”, turn it on its head through sophistry, and then use it as a framework to influence Catholics to support a candidate who has pledged as their first official act if elected to the Presidency to sign the “Freedom of Choice Act” into law (even though an alternative exists which would at least limit the evil of procured abortion) the Bishop stepped up to the microphone. He told those present: “No social issue has caused the death of 50 million people”, referring of course to the current evil of abortion on demand as it exists in the United States of America since the horrible judicial opinions in Roe and Doe. Then he spoke those four words, “This is Madness People.”
Bishop Martino is right. I for one commend his courage. He showed that same courage in his well written letter of Sept. 30 which Catholic Online once again sets forth below for all of our readers to read and prayerfully consider. In it he explains what I believe should be obvious to anyone who has read Catholic Social teaching and, for that matter, anyone who has read the Catholic Catechism. The entirety of the whole body of Social Doctrine taught by the Catholic Church rests upon the first principle of the inviolable dignity of every human person and the inalienable right to life from conception, through every age and every stage of life, up to and including natural death. Everything the Church teaches concerning war and peace, economic justice, the common good, and solidarity requires this respect for all human life. This is not a matter of a “single issue” approach to politics or policy issues. Rather, this first principle, the right to life, is the very thread with which what the late Joseph Cardinal Bernadin called “the seamless garment” is woven together. When you remove it, there is no cohesiveness to the Social teaching.
As one who has written for many years on the entirety of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church - and supported every single aspect of it - I find it inexplicable that some whom I have read and admired for years, like Doug Kmiec, now actually try to use the fullness that is the breadth and beauty of Catholic Social teaching to undermine the absolutely binding nature of that first principle. However, I now regrettably believe that he, Nicholas Cafardi and others are engaged in doing just that. Like them I am also frustrated with the current administration and with many who have held public office for the last eight years, on both sides of the aisle. However, I will NEVER cast a vote for a candidate who has expressed his intention to do away with all restrictions on the intrinsic evil of abortion and, in so doing, to then open the gates to “legalizing” euthanasia and other evil effects by commoditizing human persons. The notion that it is ever “OK” to call such an evil act as procured abortion a “right”, allow the Police Power of the State to enforce it, and if this candidate succeeds in his efforts, then use taxpayer dollars to fund it, is reprehensible. It is to call a “right” what is always wrong, the unprovoked act of State supported lethal aggression against defenseless human persons who are our innocent neighbors. Talk about an unjust war! To support the involuntary eviction from the first human sanctuary of the womb by State sanctioned killing and at the same time, with a straight face, claim you are doing so in the interest of making that very act less frequent is, to use Bishop Martino’s word, “Madness”. It defies logic, violates the Natural Law, and clearly runs contrary to the very heart of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church. And, as I have written repeatedly, it can never be considered a “moral” choice. One simply cannot do evil to accomplish what one argues is a good - and then attempt to cure the immoral nature of the act by claiming “I didn’t mean it”.
Senator Obama has pledged as his first official act upon assuming the Presidency to sign FOCA (The Freedom of Choice Act) into Law. He chose one of his appearances at Planned Parenthood to announce this fact.If he has withdrawn that promise, I invite Doug Kmiec, Nick Cafardi or any of the other Catholics now being used as apologists in his campaign to gain Catholic support, to please let me and all of our readers know about it. How can anyone with a straight face claim that Senator Obama really believes that abortion concerns a “moral issue” when he has promised to expand it, taxpayer fund it and protect it with the Police Power of the State? That is precisely what this horrid Legislation will do if it becomes law. FOCA will be lethal for our first neighbors, our children, to whom we owe an obligation in solidarity. It will also increase abortions by removing all restrictions throughout all nine months and even beyond. If passed, Abortions will be funded by money extracted from all American citizens through taxes! The “Freedom of Choice” Act is not about freedom nor is it about moral choice. It is about the triumph of what Pope Benedict rightly called “anarchic freedom" and his predecessor, the Servant of God John Paul II warned of as a “counterfeit notion of freedom”, giving some people the so called “right” (read “power”) to kill others who are innocent and without defense as a matter of positive law.
In the words of the good Bishop, "This is Madness People".

I disagree with the deposed Bishop But I will let him honor his principles. He supported the invasion of Iraq. The Catholics there are afraid to celebrate Christmas. Scranton needs to send the Bishop emeritus to Iraq to show that we still believe in the sanctity of life. He needs to be on a plane now.
Madness...? THIS IS SPARTA
Bishop Martino is a Catholic Bishop. As such, he is to uphold the teachings of the Catholic Church. The very idea of this even being newsworthy is more curious than why this Catholic leader has assumed and maintained these reported postures.
The Roman Catholic Church has maintained the same position on these political & social issues. These positions are rooted in the faith/religious beliefs that thousands of Americans have practiced and accepted for many years. The Catholic faith is not one that brings unexpected surprises or adopts different attitudes because society swings in a particular direction.
I find it refreshing that in a government where many of our public leaders are guilty of tax evasion and other illegal and questionable activities that one man, one leader, Catholic or otherwise, chooses to hold those who continue to “claim” to be righteous accountable.
As a parent of five boys ranging in ages from four to 25, my husband and I find it increasingly difficult to compete with today’s society in trying to raise fine young men who are personally accountable, responsible, and willing to champion their own values even if they are against popular society.
We do not have to agree with Catholicism, the same, as we do not have to agree with Judaism, Buddhism, Muslim, Agnosticism, etc. As Americans we do have to respect the basic rights of all Americans; one of them being Freedom of Religion, which works both ways, free to practice, and free to abandon if one doesn’t agree!
Regardless of whether I am pro-life, gay, or even Catholic, I am an American and I respect and support Bishop Joseph Martino of the Diocese of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

"Fact: Fewer abortions under Clinton than Bush." DEBUNKED. Go to
Factcheck.org Stop the spreading of this myth.
Fact: Fewer abortions under Clinton than Bush. All of that work by the so called pro life movement to elect Bush et al., and rate of abortion actually rose. How come Martino and the deacon don't mention that? See article in Christian Century which confirms these stats.
Jesus did not stop the cruxifictions while on the earth. Do we vote for the party that lied and started a war. This is lunacy. Personal responsibility dictates my relationship with God not a bishop supporting one party over another. I have never had an abortion. I do not support war, abortion, euthanasia nor capital punishment. I will not kill anyone. I will not vote repuplican because of one issue. This is anti American.
Religion & Politics don`t mix ? What flawed logic. They are inextricably united. The code of law is based on the commandments to start with & governments rule under God.(Their not understanding this notwithstanding )Look to the Martyrs who shed their life`s blood putting God before temporal rulers.May God bless the Bishop.May He rebuke & confound His enemies.
From Our Lady`s Land of The Southern Cross.
Thank you Deacon for all you do.
Maybe Bishop Martino is getting closer to doing what all the bishops should have been doing since day 1 - get out there and hit the streets, get arrested, excommunicate pro-abortion public Catholics, and really stand in front of the tanks like that guy in Tiannamen Square.
But our bishops don't do that - because our church has been too long accommodated to the government.
Our Bishops,Priests and Deacons do most certainly as private citizens and voters have the right to speak against abortion.
They also may contact their respective politicians.
The also have a moral obligation to teach us the Catechism.
We the people if we do not listen that is our problem and our problem in front of the Lord on Judgment day.
One must not remain silent when an injustice is going on in any country.
As long as they do not endorse a candidate in the pulpit the Church can say anything it wants.
Its called Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Speach. We all have it.
50,000,000 children have been aborted in this country and Im told that is more than have been killed since the Revolutionary War.
What does this say about a nation when a dog has more rights than a fetus?
When one can get rid of a child with out blinking an eye.
I want to hear what the Bishops, priests, deacons and religious say.
I also dont think that this Catholic Online is a gossip column.
If we didnt have Catholic websites, news etc. we would not have had the dialogue and victories today for the Pro-Life Movement.
If it werent for Catholic Newspapers etc. I wouldnt know what was going on.
The evil is silence on an important subject that effects humanity.
God Bless you brothers and sisters and keep up the good work.
Write your Senators and representatives, dont be discouraged it may not happen tomorrow but someday it will happen.
I am not Catholic but I want to thank Bishop Martino of Scranton for standing up for the unborn.
There is no doubt that the new president-elect is radical pro-abortion. I am glad there are public figures who are not afraid of speaking the truth about abortion and who refuse to cave in to public opinion polls.
By the way; that's leadership.
Respectfully,
