WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) – Senator John McCain is suspending his campaign and returning to the Capitol to join his fellow senators in addressing the current economic crisis we are facing. He is calling upon Senator Obama to do the same and to delay the presidential debate until action has been taken.

In remarks today, Senator McCain stated:

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

“Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward. I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

“It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration’s proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

“Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

“I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

“We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night’s debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

“I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

“Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.”

No official word has yet come from the Obama Campaign concerning their response to McCain’s request. According to campaign staff, Senator Obama called McCain Wednesday morning to discuss issuing a joint statement in support of a package to fix the economy. McCain responded later in favor of the idea. Later the Arizona Senator made public his decision to suspend.

McCain did the right thing. Once again, he proves his leadership and patriotism.

    Country first!!!

I hope and pray that he will be the next president. And if ever it is going to be Obama, I hope that he will rise to the occasion and really put his country first above all. So far, all I see in Mr. Obama is pure politics and no service. If he doesn't win, I suggest that he goes back to being a Community Organizer. It's so obvious that he can do greater things in that area than in the political arena.

    God bless America!

McCain is the one who said the economy is doing fine. Why is he worried about it now? It should be fine in his mind.

Both McCain and Obama are still being paid to do their Senate jobs. Apparently, that means nothing to Obama. McCain is the winner in this because he is putting the American people ahead of his Presidential campaign.

Obama once said that the Presidential campaign is about the American people and not about him. His failure to follow McCain's example and return to the job he is currently being paid for puts a lie to that statement. He's putting his campaign ahead of the interests of the American people and I believe that that is a clear indication of what kind of a President that Obama will be.

Poor old man McCain, doesn't he know one of the signs of old age is the inability to multi-task. The University of MS has spent over $5 million dollars on this debate is he going to pay them back when he doesn't show up. Maybe Palin and Biden should debate, oh wait, that would require her to have to answer questions.

John McCain consistently puts his country first. Just because he does that, he is criticized by the Obama people as being politically motivated. I f Obama did what McCain is doing, it would be hailed as self-sacrificing.

I am tired of the double standards put forth by the Democrats! Stop pointing fingers at each other and work together to get this crisis resolved! John McCain is a born leader and people know it! He can make a seemingly unpopular decision when it needs to be made for the good of his nation. Our country will see the benfit of his leadership right now before he is even president!

I thought Bush said the economy is doing well just a few months ago or was that just politics? We can't afford another republican then want another seven hundred billion more dollars.

Howard look up the word politician and you'll see it means: liar, strategy, cheat, say anything, be a puppet, just get elected. Let me tell you something bro, if Satan squeezed in to the Catholic Church, he walked into the front doors of both republican and democrat parties. Please don't be stuck on stupid all your life.

    COUNTRY ABOVE POLITICS !!!
Both candidates are U.S. Senators. This financial crisis will be decided in the U.S. SENATE.
This is another example of how Senator John McCain puts country first. All Obama cares about is winning the election at any cost. Obama neglected his duties as U.S. Senator before running for President, and especially after he began running for President. This 'bail out - quick fix" will negatively affect Americans for decades. Many of the bloggers who are criticizing McCain for this decision wouldn't recognize responsibility, or integrity if it bit them on the ass. Keep America strong and safe ... Elect McCain/Palin in November.
