Imagine a leisurely future without work! But beware there's a HIDDEN DARK SIDE...

The future is not what it used to be.

In the future, robots and artificial intelligence will become so capable that they will take over every imaginable job from humans. What will happen when there is no more work for people to do? How will humans adapt to this workless future? And is there a dark side to this leisure-filled possibility?

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - The primary product of technology is leisure. By saving work, technology allows fewer people to accomplish a lot more in less time. Within the next few decades, futurists believe that artificial intelligence will be at least as sophisticated and capable as the human brain, if not more so.

With such powerful brains, combined with advanced robotics, artificial intelligence would be able to do anything a human can do, except better in every way. At that time, it would be absurd to use human labor for anything.

But what will we do with a life of leisure?

Contrary to popular belief, humans are naturally industrious. There are anecdotes about people who are so lazy they make a career of milking the system of benefits to avoid work. But there are also many anecdotes about people who are wealthy enough not to work, yet they find work for themselves anyway. Many retired people seek out jobs so they have something to do, even if it's unpaid volunteer work.

Many fear that without work, people will become lazy, listless and even quarrelsome. This is where society will need to change. Schools will need to teach kids how to relax and play and to explore their creativity. Adults will have time to pursue hobbies and other interests. The pace of invention may accelerate as people think up new ideas and new things to invent.

But there may be a dark side to all this leisure.

With machines to do all the work, there will simply be no more need of the billions of people on the planet. What to do with billions of souls that have no other function than to consume resources and reproduce?

The answer will be population controls. Having children will become a privilege, not a right. Sterilizations will be forced, humans will be encouraged to have sex with robots, and if that isn't enough governments may engage in democide. Democide is the killing of a people by their own government.

The workless future is imminent. Just as we have not returned to the days of the horse and buggy, we will not return to the age of human labor once the robots take over. But what we can still control what policies we live by in this brave new world, if we participate in the discussion.

A life of leisure sounds idyllic, but it could come with a hidden dark side that few wish to think about. If morals, ethics and human rights are to be preserved, we'd better start thinking about it now.
