LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Hamas is a terrorist organization recognized by the United States, the European Union and Israel.

It is responsible for car-ramming, shooting, and stabbing attacks in Jerusalem for the past few years.

The families of the murdered and wounded Americans have decided to take Facebook to court for failing to shut down and ban the terrorist organization from the social media site.

New York civil right lawyer and the director of the Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center, Robert Tolchin and Nitsana Darshan-Leitner respectively, filed the $1 billion suit.

According to Times of Israel, the suit alleged Facebook had a "legal and moral obligation" to block the content but failed or chose not to do so.

The suit was brought to the New York State District Court under the Anti-Terrorism Act, which allows American citizens attacked overseas by terrorists to sue in US federal court.

A press release issued by the plaintiffs read: "Facebook has knowingly provided material support and resources to Hamas in the form of Facebook's online social media network platform and communication services.

"Hamas has used and relied on Facebook's online social network platform and communications services as among its most important tools to facilitate and carry out its terrorist activity."

The lead plaintiffs in the suit are Stuart and Robbi Force, the parents of a 29-year-old US Army veteran, Taylor Force, who was stabbed to death by a Hamas terrorist while he was visiting Israel on a school-sponsored trip.

The parents of 16-year-old Naftali Fraenkel, who was kidnapped and murdered in the West Bank in June 2014, joined the Forces as plaintiffs, as did the parents of 3-month-old Chaya Zissel Braun, who was killed in a 2014 car-ramming attack in Jerusalem.

The son of 76-year-old Richard Lakin, who died in a shooting and stabbing attack, and Menachem Rivkin, who was critically wounded in a stabbing attack this January, also joined as plaintiffs.

According to the lawsuit sent to Bloomberg, by Darshan-Leitner: "Facebook has knowingly provided material support and resources to Hamas in the form of Facebook's online social network platform and communication services ... simply put, Hamas uses Facebook as a tool for engaging in terrorism."

Shurat HaDin explained, "We won't stop here. After we're done with Facebook we'll go after Twitter and YouTube as well."

A verdict in the case has yet to be decided and Facebook has not responded to requests for comment.
