Tokyo's Lexus creates levitating hoverboard -- A reality? Or another hoax?

Lexus offers new model for working hoverboard.

You may find it hard to believe, but a working model for a hoverboard is actually here. The Tokyo branch of Lexus in Japan has developed a model for the hoverboard. It seems to act like magic - at least for now - as the hoverboard promises to carry a person using electromagnetism to levitate itself off the ground, just like what you see in futuristic sci-fi movies.

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - The hoverboard is called Slide. Despite already being featured in a creative and stylish video, the developers have not made any additional technical details available to the public. Slide belongs to the Tokyo branch of Lexus' "Amazing in Motion" campaign and is their fourth new project.

According to Lexus, the technology uses "liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors and permanent magnets," in order to drift up, which may be why there is smoke, as you may have seen during the promotional video. With this technology, the hoverboard acquires "frictionless movement of a kind that had been thought impossible."

"At Lexus we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible," explained Mark Templin, the Executive Vice President of Lexus International. "[The board is a] perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved when you combine technology, design and imagination."

However, Gizmodo, among others, advises viewers not to expect anything for reals. "Every hover device that relies on superconductors only works on a special magnetic surface, and this board appears to be floating on concrete at a regular old skate park," Gizmodo stated adding, "The video also doesn't actually show someone riding it, although Lexus has promised more videos of it being tested, just not right now."

Lexus has not yet released details regarding when the hoverboard will be launched, or how much it will cost. However, Lexus claimed that the board will be tested "in the coming weeks prior to the campaign's launch this summer."
