MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - As of the moment, there are no plans to ban the pornography industry in using the VR, set to release by the first quarter of 2016, according to the Variety.
"The rift is an open platform. We don't control what software can run on it. And that's a big deal," said Luckey as a response to the question whether they are going to block pornographic materials and apps on their upcoming VR.
Luckey was one of the panelists present the first Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference held in San Jose, California last Monday, where the question was raised. It was reported that his response stood out the most because of the hesitance from his fellow panelists on answering controversial questions.
According to the Daily Mail, pornography is accounted for one-third of the overall material on the Internet. Although there are recent studies that say it's around 4 percent from the total internet viewers, adult content is speculated to drive 30 percent of experienced Internet traffic.
Highly explicit materials are rampant in the market, with some technology developers taking advantage of the huge consumption; now they are trying to incorporate how these VR devices to applications.
"If you go back in history and look at any new medium in the past, porn is a key driver," said Amir Rubin, chief executive of the VR software company Sixense. He said that in Japan, the VR in porn is already big, enabling developers to earn large amounts.
If VR allows porn to freely enter our minds, this is a device many should keep out of their homes and away from their children. Perhaps Oculus has led the company down a dangerous path.
