Americans are sick of politics on social media. Here's the REAL REASON why

Uncertainty and fear are driving emotion this election cycle.

Americans are sick and tired of politics, and one another, on social media. A new study from Pew Research shows that Americans are "worn out" by all the politics on social media.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Americans are fed up with the current election cycle. More than 80 percent of social media users say they are "worn out" by the politics in their newsfeeds. Two-thirds say they found politics to be distressing while only a third said they found it informative.

The survey was conducted by Pew Research and captures the anger, upset and anxiety that many Americans are experiencing because of the election cycle.

The current election is much more bitter and acrimonious than recent, previous elections. There are fundamental shifts taking place in American society, including racial, social and economic changes. These changes are causing anxiety for millions of Americans who do not know what their future will be like. Technology and the advance of globalism has changed the world profoundly. Traditional truths no longer hold. The path to prosperity generally requires a college degree, but nobody is certain which degree.

The anxiety is part of the reason why there are two candidates to choose from who could not be more opposed to one another, except both are still white and wealthy. One is an anti-establishment nationalist and the other is a pro-establishment globalist. Both have committed sins that distress their bases and anger their rivals.

Online, debates consist of people sharing laundry lists of reasons why their opposing candidate should not be elected. This sharing of evidence creates cognitive dissonance.

Cognitive dissonance is the mental phenomenon that takes place when a person is confronted with evidence that contradicts their core beliefs. Usually, such evidence is quickly rejected. However, forcing a person to acknowledge the evidence can create pain and ultimately anger.

These emotional reactions are often too much and people block one another, or at least their posts. Friendships are being lost because of the current election.

The nation is in upheaval in many ways. Economic uncertainty combined with political desperation has made Americans uncommonly upset, and for good reason. The United States has always been prosperous. Our candidates have always been consistent. They have been magnanimous in victory or defeat. We have always pulled together following an election, no matter if we liked the results. We have never questioned the loyalty or patriotism of our leaders.

For the first time, this is untrue, and it is destroying social media, our friendships, and above all, it is destroying our country.
