LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to The Washington Times, the United States has approved roughly 2,235 refugees between October 1 and May 25.
With only four months and one week to admit nearly 7,765 refugees to meet his 10,000-person goal, U.S. President Barack Obama has applied pressure to CIS officials.
On Monday, May 23, CIS officials accepted a record-breaking 225 refugees - more than the entire month of January.
They claim the sudden jump in approvals is the result of better screenings but critics believe Obama's desperation is the driving factor.
Jessica Vaughan, policy studies director at the Center for Immigration Studies, explained: "The Obama administration is on full throttle to admit as many people as possible before the time clock runs out on them. This is the classic scenario when political expediency trumps prudence, and someone slips through who shouldn't have, and tragedy ensues."
On a similar note, the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, recently told a Senate committee that ISIS was "taking advantage of the torrent of migrants to insert operative into that flow."
Despite concerns of the accidental acceptance of terrorists, CIS officials maintain their background checks continue to ensure national security.
Thousands of applicants referred by the United Nations were interviewed in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq. The CIS department said refugees undergo more checks than any other immigrants attempting to enter the United States.
Though there is growing concern of terrorists slipping into the United States, Senate Democrats, led by Sen. Richard J. Durbin, released a letter claiming the rate of accepting refugees needs to drastically increase.
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans call for a slower, safer method of approving refugees.
