LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen has handed a tough punishment to Justice Department attorneys for lying. They will have to undergo annual ethics training and several are being banned from practicing in Texas courts.
According to Judge Hanen, the Justice Department attorneys lied to the court about Obama's "deferred action" executive order for illegal immigrants. Their lies caused 26 states to react by filing a lawsuit against the federal government.
Judge Hanen also nearly struck the government's pleadings, but declined to do so because the case in question is also being presented before the Supreme Court.
While there is no public list of which attorneys are affected by the ruling, but those who are at fault will have to undergo a minimum of three hours per year of ethics training if they wish to appear before a federal court again.
In addition, attorneys from outside the state of Texas are now banned from appearing in Texas courts. Judge Hanen was unable to disbar them entirely.
