LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - One official reported President Obama stressing the importance of targeting ISIS militants over rebel forces who oppose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The meeting was the result of activist revelations that Russian airstrikes have killed more civilians than ISIS militants in Syria. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights believes 1,502 people were killed in Russian airstrikes in Syria, with rebels and al-Qaeda militants accounting for only 40 percent of the causalities while civilians compose 32 percent.
Only twenty-eight percent of the casualties were ISIS fighters.
The unnamed official added, "The two presidents discussed the imperative of making progress on the Vienna process to bring about a ceasefire and political resolution to the civil war in Syria."
Obama believes Assad must be removed from his position to help with the transition to a political resolution, the official added. President Obama also expressed regret over Oleg Peshkov's death when his warplane was shot down by Turkey. The downed plane led Moscow to deploy an advanced missile system to Syria and Obama asked that tensions cool between Russia and Turkey.During their meeting, Obama also pushed for a diplomatic solution for the Ukraine crisis, adding that Russian sanctions can be lifted when Moscow honors the Minsk cease-fire accord.
Unfortunately, tensions continue to rise between Turkey and Russia -each of which claim they were the ones wronged.
On Monday, the Turkish prime minister announced the belief that their military was doing its job to protect their airspace, while Ahmet Davutoglu claimed: "No Turkish prime minister or president will apologize ... because of doing our duty.
"Protection of Turkish airspace, Turkish borders is a national duty, and our army did their job to protect this airspace. But if the Russian side wants to talk, and wants to prevent any future unintentional events like this, we are ready to talk."
