LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Officials believe an 18-wheeler clipped the family vehicle, causing the accident and KSLA reported the event occurred in Texarkana, AR.

Firefighters found the four passengers combing the streets near their vehicle in search of the baby.

Josh Moore, a Texarkana firefighter, explained first responders arrived on the scene to discover the survivors frantically searching the premises.

"We immediately began searching in the hay," Moore stated. "A good Samaritan was already out here searching in the hay, and he claimed he heard something in this general direction."

By moving aside hay from a drainage grate, they discovered the child sitting silently, calmly, as if she was simply waiting to be found.

"There had to be some kind of divine intervention for her to end up being okay," Moore reported. "The baby at the time - the 8-month-old - was actually sitting down in the grate, sitting up and looking up at us waiting for us to pull her out.

"She wasn't screaming, she wasn't crying, was just sitting there waiting for us."

Fire Captain Charlie Smith reported: We reached down there and she more or less had her hands up for somebody to pick her up. It took 3 of us to work her around the grate and get her back up through."

She was immediately evaluated for injuries but all EMTs discovered was a small scratch on her forehead.

"To be ejected from that all the way down this hill..." Smith stated, motioning the 25-foot distance the child traveled following the accident.

"Yeah, a good 25 feet away from this grate right her3e and end up being okay is just simply amazing," Moore said. "Up until we heard her, I was just worried about it being more of a recovery rather than a rescue.

"But once we heard her, it was just a sigh of relief."

Smith added: "So many times, we go out and things aren't okay. And just during the holidays here to have a positive just feels good."

Each of the vehicles occupants were taken to the hospital, none in serious condition. One person remains hospitalized but is reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.

No names have been released but officials reported the family is from Hope, Arkansas.

Texarkana police confirmed the car seat, which was discovered outside the family car when first responders arrived, was not installed properly, nor was the child properly restrained at the time of the wreck.

No citations were issued related to the improper use of the car seat or restraints.

An 18-wheeler was believed to have clipped the family's vehicle, causing the crash and the driver has been cited for an improper and unsafe lane change.
