LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to the New York Times, Assistant Chief William Aubry stated witnesses on each side of the platform, as well as witnesses on the train, pointed to the same suspect: Melanie Liverpool-Turner.

Melanie, a 30-year-old Queens woman, was immediately taken into custody and was later charged with second-degree murder.

After reviewing surveillance videos of the platform, officials believe the attack was unprovoked.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was hit by the train and emergency responders struggled to retrieve her body from beneath the third car.

The New York Daily News explained Melanie suffers mental conditions and was seen smirking during her arraignment.

Prosecutor Matthew Thiman told the judge, "This is a strong case with multiple eyewitnesses and the defendant has admitted to the crime."

Melanie rolled her eyes as Thiman spoke then interrupted him to say, "What? I didn't admit to nothing."

Mathew Mari, Melanie's lawyer, told Judge Lebovits his client maintains she is innocent.

"The defendant has indicated to me that she does wish to inform the court that she is not guilty," Mari stated, adding she has no criminal record.

Police report Melanie has been interrogated before after she claimed to have pushed another woman to her death at the Union Square station on October 19.

"I hear voices," officials reported her saying. "I push people in front of trains."

The case closed when witnesses claimed the woman jumped to her death, which was classified as suicide.

Meanwhile, Melanie was given a psychiatric evaluation, leading investigators to believe her proximity to the suicidal woman may have been the cause of the false memory.

On Tuesday, Mari told reporters: "I know that she did have some kind of medical history but she wouldn't go into it. I interviewed her briefly. She didn't have much to say other than she's not guilty. And she didn't want to discuss anything else."

Melanie is being held without bail pending her Thursday court appearance.
