'That's a major problem': Brazilian smugglers help Middle Eastern immigrants pass US borders

At least one man with Taliban ties has been captured.

Border patrol agents have teamed up with Homeland Security to unveil a Brazilian smuggling ring working with the Middle East.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to The Washington Times, Brazilian smugglers are working with Middle Eastern terrorists to infiltrate the United States.

A contact in the Middle East only needs to contact the Brazilian network and sit back while the smugglers weave a path through South and Central America. Once in Mexico, Mexicans take over and help the possible terrorists cross the border into the U.S.

Immigration officials have already identified at least twelve Middle Eastern men who attempted to enter the United States with help from the Brazilian smugglers.

One of the men was identified by Homeland Security officials and is believed to have ties to the Taliban. The officials also stated he was "involved in a plot to conduct an attack in the U.S. and/or Canada."

While the Afghan is currently in custody, his identity is strictly guarded and an investigation has been launched.

Others smuggled into the United States with help from the Brazilians include Palestinians and Pakistanis. Some were immediately captured while others were not apprehended until after they had crossed the border.

Republican Duncan Hunter has openly spoken against the U.S. Border Control's current methods and used a documented account of the incident in which two Mexicans working with the Brazilian smugglers helped the group of a dozen Middle Eastern men enter the United States.

They traveled fifteen miles on American soil before their discovery - a distance Hunter finds unacceptable.

To make matters worse, Border Patrol agents did not immediately identify the Afghan man's link to the Taliban because the databases are not linked, slowing the processing procedure.

Joe Kasper, Hunter's chief of staff, explained: "It's disturbing, in so many ways. The interdiction of this group ... validates once again that the southern border is wide open to more than people looking to enter the U.S. illegally strictly for purposes of looking for work, as the administration wants us to believe.

"What's worse, federal databases weren't even synced and Border Patrol had no idea who they were arresting and the group was not considered a problem because none of them were considered a priority under the president's enforcement protocol. That's a major problem on it's own, and it calls for DHS to figure out the problem - and fast."

Despite reports of the group being detained, Hunter cited a government document claiming the Afghan man and six of his cohorts have claimed asylum and have since been released from custody. Their whereabouts are currently unknown.

A livid Hunter wrote to Homeland Security to demand an explanation of the booking and background processes but has yet to announce whether Homeland Security has or will comply.
