In the minds of murderers: 9/11 began with a small question and grew to a national tragedy

Osama bin Laden was inspired following a 1990 incident in which a pilot purposely crashed a plane into the sea, effectively murdering the 217 passengers.

The horrific tragedy of 9/11 was reportedly started when Osama bin Laden heard of the murder-suicide on EgyptAir Flight 990. The plane's pilot crashed into the ocean, prompting bin Laden to wonder why he didn't choose to crash into a building.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The Jerusalem Post reported new details have been revealed in an article titled "September 11 attacks - the story untold."

The article was published in al-Qaeda's weekly magazine al-Masrah, and claimed Gamil al-Batouti's move to crash EgyptAir Flight 990 into the Atlantic Ocean in 1999 was what inspired bin Laden to crash planes into buildings.

The Jerusalem Post reported al-Masrah's cover of bin Laden's question, "Why didn't he crash it into a nearby building?"

After the idea of targeting buildings came to be, bin Laden met with Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, who was independently planning to crash hijacked planes into buildings as well.

Sheikh Mohammad was later named "the principal architect of the 9/11 attacks" by the 9/11 Commission Report.

It was not until bin Laden met with Sheikh Mohammad that the idea of crashing American planes into buildings came to be.

The al-Qaeda magazine continued, explaining Sheikh Mohammad's initial plan to crash 12 American planes at once.

In the end, the plan for 9/11 was established between Mohammad and bin Laden.

Four jet airliners were hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorist and two successfully crashed into New York's Twin Towers. Later that same day, the World Trade Center collapsed from fires spread from the first tower.

The terrorist attack left nearly 3,000 people dead, most of whom were civilians.

The two remaining planes were heading to the Pentagon and Washington D.C. The Pentagon was struck and suffered a partial collapse in its western side, while passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers and crashed the final plane into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Since the deadly terror attacks, America continues to hold annual memorials and swears "We will never forget."
