HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA (Catholic Online) - The Mountain Meadows reservoir, known as Walker Lake, was once a famous fishing hole west of Susanville. While there is a $3.5 million drought safety net nearing completion at Folsom Lake, this side has been lost.
A resident named Eddie Bauer, who lived near the lake his entire life, described the lake, saying, "Everywhere that you see that's wet, there was water."
The residents couldn't believe what happened to the lake, particularly since some of them had gone fishing just the night before. Bauer said that he has never seen the lake run dry and that he and the other residents would like to get some answers regarding the incident.
Pacific Gas & Electric Company owns the rights to the water and uses it for hydroelectric power. The company's spokesman, Paul Moreno, stated, "It's the situation we worked so hard to avoid but the reality is we're in a very serious drought, there's also concerns for the fish downstream."
In Bauer's opinion, he believes there should have been at least two weeks' worth of water left, which would have given PG&E a sufficient amount of time to relocate the fish. Bauer said, "This makes me feel like they didn't want to do a fish rescue and that it was easier to open that sucker up Saturday night."
According to the PG&E officials, nobody opened the reservoir. They claimed the water simply ran out. But the residents are worried that this might also happen to other areas of the state. Doug Carlson, of the Department of Water Resources, reported the reservoirs are continuing to be far below normal. Carlson also added that water concerns are part of a major issue across the state.
Carlson said, "We are reliant upon rainfall to fill those lakes of course and until we get more rain we're not likely to see any appreciable increase in the reservoir levels."
Due to the drought, workers have been sent to Folsom lake to work on floating barges that pump water to the city of Folsom and the prison if the lake gets too low. If it doesn't rain soon, the barges will be put to use.
